Default Weidlich pens, filigree and overlay

I have a Weidlich matchstick filler from 1906, I know because that is when it was given to Margaret. It is black hard rubber with gold filigree. The filigree has shallow linear designs. On Anderson Pen's blog a Weidlich matchstick filler with a bit more relief was discussed in a 'favorite pen' video. That pen had a more ornate filigree, more relief. Now on eBay there is a Weidlich matchstick filler with a gold overlay in high relief, beautiful.

My question is, would Weidlich have jobbed out the overlay or filigree and had the various types in a catalog that the purchaser could specify or did the purchaser send their pen to someone who specialized in making the filigree or overlay themselves after purchase? Did some of the pen makers have in-house artisans that did the filigree and overlay work?

I don’t know the answer to your questions, all I know is that I now have this song stuck in my head.

You really must buy it. Then you'll have the world largest collection of filigree Weidlich matchstick pens. ;-)

Alas, my Weidlich expert is no longer around to answer your question in greater detail, but I'm confident that Weidlich matchstick pens were sold with overlays in place and purchasers were not left to make their own arrangements.

I no longer own a Weidlich but those that I did own were more conventional lever fillers and really well made. As I recall there was a jewelry manufacture connection.

Did your lever fillers have Weidlich nibs. I have a bulb filler but it has a warranted nib, perhaps a replacement.

Yes, a Weidlich nib, very tunable as I recall. I also had one with a Star nib which wasnt so good and made of steel.

The material was black and grey marble with red veins
