Default Some help please - What is a Parker 51 9ct Presidential FP worth ?

    Some help please

What is a Parker 51 Mk II / III 9ct Presidential FP worth ?

    Have been offered one.

All shells are very good ( seen photograph only - attached ) , I have a complete full NOS insert ( Nib, Hood & Feed ) so I am only in interested in the shells

There is little on the net that I have found.

Know what P61's are worth, thought this was worth more.

    Any thoughts - in $ or £

    Thank

I would expect the value of any 9ct pen to fluctuate up and down depending on the gold value. So if you're only interested in the cap and barrel then it would be worth knowing the weight and finding out the gold price that day. It gives you a starting point at least.

There is one currently on auction on ebay UK starting at £450 plus delivery

Do an advance search on eBay and limit your search to sold items only, that way you avoid most of the chancers that list some items at stupid high prices, awaiting one of the rich fools who are easily parted as the old saying goes, some of the high priced items have been on eBay for years without anyone being fooled, but not always, searching for sold items is a more realistic way of finding out an items true value.

Just did a quick search and those that have sold averaged out to around £460

A great many thanks to Chrissy ( as always ) and, of course, Paul for both their comments.

I would like to hear from someone as to what price they would pay to buy a very good one to add to their collection.

    Am aware of the scrap value of a 9 ct gold P51 - 23/24grams - £230/240

    ( Parker 61's are 16/17 gms - £160/170 )

This is true, but only to a degree. Sadly, sold items don't go back very far. Maybe other auction prices might help too?

Have checked just about very channel possible.

The net - all auction houses & ebay , all the collectors I know.

    Hence the post.

Oddly, is very difficult to find a very good one without a name engraved.

I thought £600 would buy one, even just the shells.

It appears to be not the case.

    Many Thanks

Wow. At that sort of price, there are plenty of pens I would choose over a 9ct Parker 51.
The one I linked to on ebay has had the personalisation removed.

Looked at it, on my radar.

    The seller wants £900.

Seen another UK ebay @ £950

Frankly, I have lost interest in one.

As for other rare Parker pens, I have all the ones that I have ever seen bar one

A while ago I backed off a Parker 61 Boucheron basketweave 61 FP in solid 18K at £1650, still kicking myself.

They were made at Aspreys, Tiffany's too.

    In 75 51 45

    Few have ever seen one.

    Thanks, Chrissy.

I do have a additional question please

If you could have any Parker pen regardless of price - what would it be ?

I would be very interested in any replies

If that question is aimed at me, I don't have a hankering for any particular Parker pen. If I could afford to buy a pen regardless of price I would be tempted by either a Montblanc Christie or Copernicus. However, at my age, I don't think I now need to concern myself with finding either one. I'm in the frame of mind for selling off those pens I have rather than buying new ones.

I would like a 51 aero in forest green with a factory stub or italic nib. I like the plastic pens.

A reasonable condition senior Duofold in (ranked) Burgundy, Black or Red. With a stub or semiflexible nib.

A Parker 51 in a colour that I like (midnight blue, cedar blue) with a wet writing fine/extra fine nib.

Unfortunately not only is money very much an issue, but access is very limited from here.

For me the only ones on my list now I have the only ones I have, are the original Big Red Duofold and one of the large size Vacumatics, both of those are in short supply these days. If I was honest Parker have not made too many pens that float my boat, my only Parkers at the moment are a couple of early English 51's one a Vac and the other an Aerometric both with the jucey wet Medium nibs Newhaven was famed for and a Duofold AF which has the smoothest nib I have ever written with, but don't actually like the look of the pen, for me it's not a Duofold, it looks average, it should look like it's the top of the range which it does not.

I find myself drawn to Sheaffer pens, mainly because of their interesting filling systems and the look of their nib designs.

A great many thanks for the replies.

I always like to read what other informed Parker collectors have to say, particularly here.

Have attached a header sheet to some files I have on Parker 51's, it may or may not be of use to others.

Also some good photography of the Aero colours - the colour matches I think are spot on.
( I am sure the informed will realise that there is one colour missing - a very very dark burgundy which borders on plum - it almost impossible to photograph it correctly )

An add on. ( Searching for rare Parker pens I always wanted )

For the last 7 years I have been looking for an English Parker 61 Caribbean Green.

If you have ever sort one it is an interesting ride.

You will see a lot of Vista Blue’s, Teal Blue’s and expensive USA made Surf Green’s

When I started I thought it was an impossible task.

    These are seriously rare.

Then 3 months ago I bought one.

    Newhaven made.

( Only ever seen one other, a Classic with damaged shells on UK ebay – it was beyond repair / restoration )

Have included a comparison to a standard Vista Blue, anyone noticed any difference bar the colour ?

Rather than create a new post I have added this.

Can anyone here please tell me how rare a Parker 51 Cartridge pen is.

    The current value ?

The only information that I have is they made at Arrow Park. ( Parker 51.com et al are no help - they are not accurate )

    The production dates vary alot.

Somewhere between 1958 and 1963. ( Personally I think the span was about 18 months )

Foolishly I once had one and sold it – the offer from another collector was double what I had paid.

    Any comments would be appreciated.

Keep in mind that many people who have a lot of pen knowledge are involved this weekend at the Chicago Pen Show, which is one of the 3-4 largest pen shows in the US each year. I know at least one person who might be able to answer these questions is there for certain.

    Sir,

A Great Many Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunely I live in England, I seldom have an opportunity to visit USA Pen Shows.

I mostly rely on another USA collectors to tell me what they saw when they visited them.

Would greatly appreciated any information that you would wish to offer after your visit ( here or PM )

I am going to guess that the 1958/9 initial production run was under 2500. About 1500 and there was never another after that.

    Thanks again.
