    Default Sheaffer Balance dimensions

    Hi all

Anyone know of any links to sites listing the different models of Sheaffer Balance pens, giving dimensions, filling types and nib versions.

Just bought my first and would like to know what I have bought, as it's smaller than I was expecting.

    Thanks

    Paul

I'm just running off to work, no time to link, but Richard Binder's site has a dedicated Balance page with models and dimentions. Enough to ID the pen, that is.

You seem to be doing something with the photos that just gives us a link rather than showing us a photo on the post.
The way to show the photo on your post is to Edit Post, Go Advanced, Scroll down to Manage Attachments, and upload your photos in the box that comes up. Then click on each one to add them to the post.

Here's my "field guide" for quickly checking. It's not a collector's guide or anything like that, just how I quickly tell what I'm looking at for buying pens. I am a pen user/writer first and collector second.

That looks like a standard Balance to me. 5-1/4 inches (give or take a little) is the "standard" or "full" length usually. The very early "long" Balances are longer than that, but you can tell if you have one of those just based on how the barrel is shaped. They are plainly longer just by looking at them. Some of the slender pens are a little longer as well, but it's much less obvious than if you have the early "long" Balance. A couple of my slender Balances with #3 nibs are more 5-3/8 or so in length, but this is pretty minor stuff. It's still a "full length" pen.

The "short" Balance is usually about 4-3/4 or so, again give or take a little. The "petite" Balance is somewhere closer to 4-1/4 or 4-1/8 or so. But the Petite has a shortened lever as well that makes it a bit easier to pick out of a group as well.

My view is that the harder thing to pick out online is whether you have a "slender" Balance or a "standard". The "oversize" Balance is easier to pick out usually because it's quite a bigger pen. Sometimes you get lucky and the pen has a "1000" or a "875" imprint, which helps you tell.

That's a 74W, given the model name Statesman starting in 1938. Your pen is likely from 1936-WWII. It is often referred to as a standard-size Balance.

Balances were offered in a very wide range of sizes, from the little Petite to the large Oversize.
