Default Quick hit: Birmingham - Duquesne Incline Station Red

Quick hit: great flow, smooth writing, funny smelling. A lovely brick red with a little shading. Pairs beautifully in my dryish writing Esterbrook LJ. Some feathering and fair dry times.

I love red inks and Duquesne Incline Station Red from Birmingham Pen Company, is a great ink with an absurdly long name.

Initial impressions are that it feels lubricated, smells funny, and has a nice color. Quite nice to write with using an Esterbrook LJ with new 2556 fine nib.

The ink has a bit of subtle shading, depending on nib. The hue is a slightly brownish red, like a brick red (hard to get the color spot on with a picture but it seems a little bit bolder to my eye). It is similar to de Atramentis Oriental Red but not as bright or light colored and is easier on the eyes to read.

Dry times are around 15 seconds with Medium flow out of the moderate to dry Estie. Some multipass shading. It doesn't completely disappear with water droplets sitting on it for 15 seconds. It feathers on cheap paper.

Overall I'm quite pleased with this red and it comes at a nice price. Also the bottle label looks cool and has some information about Duquesne Incline railway.

I love the Birmingham inks. I've been wanting a bottle of Forbes Field Green forever, but they've been out of it forever. Their Winter Garden Snowflake is a bright, pure frosty cyan that is one of my favorite inks.
