Default Hero Bent-nib Calligraphy Pens tweak

Hi all...I've got a Hero 8 Horses (yep, that's really the name) but the nib is a little scratchy when I make marks in some directions.

These pens are VERY inexpensive, under $10.00, so not really worth sending off the a pro to work on, but I thought someone here might have a suggestion. I've got my dad's Arkansas stone, and some very, very fine wet-dry sandpaper--is there a special way to use them? Circular motion?

    Thanks!

I would start by making sure the tines are aligned then some figure 8's on the finest grit of a three grit finger nail buffer.
