    Very interesting. Thanks for that link. As a Brit I am surprised that I had never heard of this "first duty of Prime Ministers", although I suppose given the history of nuclear weapons it is a relatively recent "tradition".

    On a personal note, I find disturbing the idea that if we can't live in this world then nobody can. A sentiment (near enough) that seems to be behind most thoughts of retaliation.


    And on an unrelated note, it should be remembered that Boris Johnson - like Theresa May - never won a general election. I see them as caretaker PMs, but, as with such events time will reveal how effective he will be.

    Yes, the practice was news to me too, though presumably as old as the independent 'deterrent'.

    How soon we forget. Theresa May won a general election in June 2017. She kept saying she would not call one, then she did and lost her majority, but the Conservatives won more seats than any other party

    I meant neither Johnson or May were elected by the public at the time of their elevation to the PMs office. Poor choice of words in my original statement.
