Or me anywhere. I use the bag-in-bag method with colourful sub-pouches (e.g. Nock pen cases) to aid organization and discovery. Sometimes it works.

That is a funny!
I find that the most useful pocket on my backpack is the one on the top that can easily be opened without disrupting anything else.
In that pocket, I have my reading glasses (I know, I didn't need it before), headphone, single pen case with the fountain pen in rotation in it.

My laptop case has a number of neat compartments which I use in a logical manner so that I can find anything. Then I forget what my logic was. Or I forget whether I put the item required in the case at all, stop searching for it, then find it in there later.
