That was in equal measure both interesting and depressing.
It highlights just how fortunate those in the US are, with regard to pens and pen people, compared to many other countries. I am one of those doomed to be, if I ever want it, a solitary collector. There is little to no outreach from the existing cemented pen groups or individuals.
Oh, and 11 mil for a watch? I'll take two!
No local pen clubs? Perhaps if you put some feelers out through NZ Facebook and other connections then you may be surprised. Is Dennis Hamilton still active for example, and Pen Classics must have some good connections.
No reason to be a solitary collector unless that is your preference.
ETA - what about the New Zealand Fountain Pen Group on Facebook

Isnt it a bit dramatic to say that you are doomed to be a solitary collector?

I am a member of an NZ group on Facebook. Not the one in your link, which I believe was succeeded by this one. However, the vast majority of members are on the North Island. I live on the South Island. So no, not dramatic, merely accurate. I've seen precisely 1 other person using a fountain pen since I moved here a decade ago.
The cost of travelling from my city to Auckland, say, and staying a couple of nights, while probably fun to meet some actual pen people, will be the cost of buying a pretty decent pen online. Just to put it in perspective.
Their pen show was in July, we are going end of August. No other events on that I can find.
Don't forget to stop off at Aesthetic Bay in the Ion Shopping Center. I hear it is Leigh Reyes favorite store. The shopping center there has 4 floors, so your wife won't be bored while you window shop the many pen brands.

All the Best.
Bucket list - walk the Camino de Santiago again
Definitely going to Aesthetic Bay to fondle the Nakaya and Dani Trio pens (if they'll let me!), but my main pen place of interest will be the Fook Hing Trading Co.
