Default Ink Review: Diamine Raw Sienna

Today I'm reviewing Diamine Raw Sienna ink.

Diamine Raw Sienna is an unsaturated yellowish light brown dye based ink. It’s from Diamine Inks standard range.

Sienna is an earth pigment containing iron oxide and manganese oxide. In it’s natural state it is yellow-brown and is called raw sienna. When heated it becomes a reddish brown and is called burnt sienna. Along with ochre and umber it was one of the first pigments to be used by humans.

I found it quite a well-behaved ink ink to write with. It exhibited some nice shading, flowed well and lubricated the nib quite smoothly across the page.

    • Flow Rate: Good.
    • Lubrication: Good. Smooth across the page.
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Saturation: Not a saturated ink.
    • Shading Potential: Nice shading seen.
    • Sheen: None seen.
    • Show-Through: Mainly noticeable on cheap notebook and Whitelines papers.
    • Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Not seen.
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen, even after over 1 week in the pen.
    • Staining (pen): Not seen after several days in the pen - easy clean-up with water.
    • Staining (hands): Easy to wash off hands.
    • Clogging: Not seen. Seems unlikely.
    • Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof and has no water resistance.
    • Availability: Available in 30ml and 80ml bottles from Diamine Inks web-site and many other outlets.
