Default Dallas Pen Show in September: Vendor list confirmed

This week, the buzz is the San Francisco Pen Show. Head over to this thread by Jon and have fun.

According to the Pen Show calendar, Commonwealth Show is next in early September, and then next is my "home show", the Dallas Pen Show.

So here's the list of vendors (saving y'all one trip to our website):

DISCLAIMER: Even though this list is pretty finalized, there's always last minute changes and cancellations, plus we have a few vendors waiting in a standby queue.

They are not coming. They missed Washington DC as well from the info I got.

I spoke with Brian in Chicago in May and he said they are cutting back the number of shows this year.

Fact is, their tables got claimed rather quickly. And we have vendors standing by for any last minute cancellations.

A brand ambassador will have a number of Conid pens for people to try out.

I can’t wait for the show. I’ve already requested time off work to attend on Friday. So much fun!

The show is tomorrow, y'all. I'm going to the hotel later this afternoon to help out and make sure the vendors can setup and they got their folders in order.

Friday started briskly as the vendors setup their tables and mingling among themselves from 8-10am.

At 10am, the lines of public attendees were already reached near the hotel front desk (so reported the pen club volunteers working the welcome desk). When the pen club president Mike Walker announced that the show has started through the PA systems, us vendors were ready.

The crowd started to pour into the larger room where I was, and surprisingly they continue to do so until close to 8pm in the evening. No lulls (or "nap time" as quipped by a few vendors), at least not this year.

As a matter of fact, I talked to at least 7 people (good mix between vendors and regular attendees) and the consensus was that there were a lot more new faces coming into the show this year compared to previous ones.

I'm happy to support that assessments, from my little corner, I explained to more first timers or beginners in the hobby about vintage pens, restoration, and flexible nibs than last year.

This is Friday, where the attendees would have to get a full day or half-day time off from work to attend, and in addition to regular attendees, I saw new people hanging out until the show closed for the evening.

NOTE: I did take a few photos, but I'm not posting it here with people taking issue with recognizable faces and all that, just go to instagram and punch in #dallaspenshow2019 and you'll see a lot of photos.

Saturday and my impression in the next post....

    Saturday,

The number of people lining up in the morning (9am start) was amazing. I know that Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex is a big place with a lot of people, but it still incredible that so many people would spend their weekend at a niche show like this.

And as the day went on, it became readily apparent to me that the age range of the showgoers are starting to skew towards the younger end. I had fun talking to an 8th grader whose latest pen was a vintage safety pen, was able to score a gold-filled Conklin crescent at the show, and he can talk vintage stuff like he had collected them for decades

Quite a few of young couples, best friends who penable each other, sisters who poked fun at each other. And a few people determined to get a Pilot Myu.

Last but not least, my pen friends, my pen people. So good to see them again, it feels like two days are way too short because we all know that it'd be another year before we meet again.

Why can't we have bi-annual pen shows?

Many vendors offer national coverage by attending a substantial number of pen shows all across the USA and Canada. Expecting them to return to the same city twice a year in addition to their other shows is a bit much. You might suggest to the promotors/owners of the Dallas show that you'd like to run a smaller club show for local vendors, but still take care to avoid scheduling conflicts with established shows.

That was a rhetorical question, Fred

I know first hand how hard it is to organize vendors, and being one myself, I also know how expensive it is to attend a show.
