    Alright! Mystery Ink #27!

I got in the mail a couple of days ago, and it had leaked a bit in its journey to me. Had to empty a pen before I could load up for this quick review. I didn't notice any sheen on my paper, but will try it out on Tomoe River later. Dries super fast so I can see it being very useful for daily note taking!

I hope I did the upload right this time! First image is ambient environment, no lights on. Second image is window light. For some reason my phone didn't want to take a clear photo.

    Nice reviews so far!

Meanwhile... Maybe it is only one vial but I am so frustrated with the leaks. I used o-ring sample vials, tightened lids as much as my strength permits, then wrapped around the lid and vial with silicone sealing tape, then wrapped that in plastic packing wrap, then put that in a sealing plastic envelope and that finally inside the box. And yet there's still a leak.

How do Goulet and Andersen manage to send me dozens of vials with zero leaks despite no sealing tape or anything else, and yet mine always leak despite all the extra precautions I take???

I may have to encase the vials in a solid blob of epoxy resin next time.

Mine had absolutely no leaks at all. Perhaps it has to do with starting at a Mile High altitude? Pressure differential?

Mine came wednesday absolutely no leaks and was packaged so amazing, but I had to fly to CO thursday so I haven't inked it up so I can't wait until I get home to NC monday ink it up. I'm really excited I love brown inks and I'd love to add a light brown ink to my tiny collection one day.

    Mystry ink 27

Well, I didn't have a leaky vial; I had an exploding pen. As in, catastrophic material failure and brown fingers. The offending instrument was a Wing Sung 3008 extra fine. It has now been properly dismembered.

All is well now. MI 27 was safely transferred to a Wing Sung 3007. An added attraction is that this little Kaweco Sportlike pen writes wetter, smoother than the 3008.

As to the chromas, they first showed flat, flat brown. But after they dried, an intriguing red umbra developed.

Based on the chromas, I know what ink this ISN'T, but I ain't sayin' just yet.

    Oh...and the paper? Clairefontaine.

Hmm... package from Colorado? I wasn't expecting anything was I? (hadn't checked this thread lately)

    Now it makes sense!

My portion also leaked a bit, I have about 2.25ml to work with. I think the candy-like scent is the fuseable rubber seal strip.

1ml loaded in the Moonman ED and ready to go! It's certainly quite opaque.

    Many thanks azkid!!

It's browner in person than my phone camera makes it look in this image. The Moonman likes it and so do I so far.

My latest fountain pen sketch from last evening using MI#27

It is really fun to use MI#27 for sketching.
It´s very little (to no existent) water resistance makes it an awesome sketching ink using washes.

Apart from sketching this ink behaves very well.
I´m not a particular fan of brown inks, but this one is really nice.

Sorry I'm so late to post I had to stay in Colorado longer than expected but I'm trying to get a pen cleaned out now to test the new mystery ink. I just have to make sure I really get it cleaned out good, it had the last bit of brown ink I had left in it and I want to make sure the brown ink I had in it doesn't affect the brown mystery ink.

    Thanks

    Finally edited my photos!

This is a diluted eyedropper sketch, from way back when I received the ink originally. The very darkest areas have a little bit of sheen even here.

    IMG_20190317_133411_edit.jpg

Writing on Oxford Optik with an FPR Himalaya ultraflex. Lots of sheen, low-light pic to show. It shines like shellac. (Very wet nib, so I'll be getting it darker than some).

    IMG_20191020_221508_edit.jpgIMG_20191020_221537_edit.jpg

I did one of my Inktobers with this, same pen - on Rhodia again, still sheen.

    IMG_20191010_225649-01_edit.jpgIMG_20191010_225747-01_edit.jpg

I like it, it goes down smooth and dark.

A little more writing on a staples "M" writing pad. It surprised me that even after a few days without using the pen there was no crud and it started right away. It does write wetter than most ink out of my Aurora but it isn't to the point of being to wet of a writer

At long last I finally tried out Mystery Ink #27.

In short, I found it to be on the dry side but a nice dark brown hue and shade. I don't care for yellowish browns or overly reddish brown. This is in between.

It flows well in my wet-writing Montblanc 221, laying down a dark line that took 20-30s to dry, but was reluctant to flow in a drier-writing Jinhao 51A, putting down a lighter line that dried within 5s.

Shading is very, very minimal. The ink looks darkest with a second pass but no darker with a third.

It behaved beautifully with no feathering, minimal show through, and no bleed through on even cheap printer paper. It just pools and then soaks in. MI 27 would make a great office ink that looks almost black out of a wet pen unless closely inspected. (see written review comparing MI 27 next to GvFC Carbon Black).

My only other brown is Diamine Macassar, a very similar color but with a more generous flow.

Overall, I like this ink. I wanted to try another dark brown to see if it would unseat Macassar as my favorite, but it doesn't. If I used brown ink a lot and only had wet writers, then maybe it would be worth getting. But I have plenty of Macassar left and don't see a need to get MI #27.

    And now for the reveal.

    Mystery Ink #27 is.....

    Diamine 150th Anniversary Espresso.

    Thanks all for participating!

Look for the MI #28 thread coming soon.
