FS: Blue Sheaffer PFM III (XXF nib)
c.1960-68 Sheaffer PFM III (Blue, GFT, Snorkel filler, 14k XXF nib). Measures 5 1/4" capped. Sheaffer’s PFM (“Pen For Men”) was marketed as an oversized version of their Thin Model Snorkel line of pens. These pens have a thick barrel girth yet their sections are ergonomically tapered, narrowing closer to the nib to fit the raccoon pawed and hamfisted alike. Other ergonomically innovative features include the clutched cap (like the Parker 51's) and Sheaffer's famous Rube Goldberg snorkel filling system for a clean fill even from the very bottom of the bottle. To fill one: (i) turns the blindcap to fully extend the Snorkel tube; (ii) pulls the blindcap back to fully extend the pump out of the back of the barrel; (iii) submerses the snorkel tube in ink; then (iv) depresses the blindcap so that the pump moves back into the barrel. This pen's filling system has been completely overhauled in the last month. Both seals were replaced and it has a new silicone sac, which is not only more durable than latex but yields a better fill (thanks to Ron Zorn for the tip!). The pen now fills to factory specs (approx .8mL) with no leaks and good pressure – shoots ink like a squirt gun if you’re feeling mischievous. Firm 14k Sheaffer inlaid nib lays down a smooth and consistent XXF line (see writing sample above).
Condition: Gold-filled trim shows no wear at all aside from a couple short hairsbreadth slivers of brassing on the right edge of the top and bottom of the clip. Surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other notable blemishes. NO CRACKS, CHIPS, PERSONAL ENGRAVINGS, MISSING PARTS, BENT/MISALIGNED TINES, OR CAP CLUTCH ISSUES. Sheaffer USA imprint on cap is deep and fully legible.
