Default Platinum Century #3776 Double Broad Nib

Review of the Platinum Century #3776 double broad fountain pen posted to inktronics.wordpress.com . Thanks for reading! by IvanRomero, on Flickr

Platinum Century #3776 by IvanRomero, on Flickr

You can view all the pictures and the hand written portion on my blog.

Platinum Century #3776 C nib (Double Broad)
    Diamine Asa Blue

This pen has been on my want list for some time. I finally purchased one direct from Japan. My original order was for a broad nib but the seller emailed me that they were out and Platinum themselves were out of stock for about a month. The seller was quick to offer a refund but I asked about other nib options they had in stock. One of the options was this double broad nib. I decided to go for it primarily because Asian nibs tend to be finer than western counterparts.

I did not expect such a broad and wet nib. The nib is so broad that it is just to much for my hand. On the very big plus side, there is so much tipping on this nib that a very nice stub or cursive italic should be possible.

The pen itself is very light and comfortable to use posted or un-posted. The pen has a very classic design that begs comparison to Montblanc. Platinum kept the ornaments to a minimum so the pen does not look at all gaudy. The 14k gold nib is springy but getting line variation from it is difficult since the tipping is so broad.

This pens claim to fame is a feature of a special inner cap that helps seal up the nib and feed. This, according to Platinum, keeps the ink fresh for up to a year. It is the same system as found on the lowly Platinum Preppy. If the Preppy is any indicator of the cap performance, the #3776 Century cap should work perfectly.

The pen measures about 119 mm uncapped, 139 mm capped. If you post the pen, you are looking at 154 mm. The Century looks almost identical to my Pilot Custom 742. There are some very minor differences in the cap band and clip. It would be easy to confuse the two pens if you were being careless.

This pen is destined to be worked on by Mr. Pendleton Brown. It remains to be seen how the pen will react after modification.

    Thank you for reading!

Thank you Sailor. I did want to say that this review was totally done on an iPad Mini. Except for the hand written part, of course.

A simple but clear review such as this brings out a plain old black pen into something rather special. Compliments aside, stupid question is next.

Mate, why black? Don't you want the red or blue? They are gorgeous.

No stupid questions. It's simple really. The other colors don't match my cape. . Seriously though, I like black pens and black costs much less than the other colors.

I guess that because you use WordPress, you can do that. BlogSpot won't let me. Nevertheless your photos are inspirational.

I have a red one with a fine nib which I liked very much so I got a black one with a soft fine nib. Waiting for it to arrive but I tried my friend's SF and enjoyed the feel of it.

I bought a bourgogne (transparent red) a few weeks and I've really enjoyed it. The medium is a true Western medium, not a fine like most asian pens. Mine is also off to Mr. Brown as soon as I can bear to part with it.

Apologies for the late reply, just getting back from my road trip and catching up on things. How flexy is that SF?

Right? It's hard to let them go.

The proper nib size is called the C nib, just in case you start looking for one.

I haven't tried enough flex nibs to give an accurate description but it's softer than the Noodler's flex. I can get decent line variation from it if I want that, or I can just use it for the sort of cushion it provides. Flow is wetter than the firm F. I'll test it on Rhodia pad and upload a scan as soon as I get the chance.

Great review, Ivan! I am not surprised that it is too broad to be comfortable. I have a Nakaya with a B nib, and find that almost too broad - a BB would be huge. But the plan to stub via PB is an awesome plan. I have recently been stubbing a lot of B nibs as the pens arrive, (and even M nibs) and have fallen in love with my pens all over again.

    Cheers,

    Ken

    thanks for the review.

I pulled out my 2 preppies to check on the cap thing you mentioned. They've been in the drawer untouched for months. probably 6 months. they both wrote immediately- as in better than many of my daily writers.

that is a hell of a cap!

Thank you for the excellent review. I would be really interested in any follow up reports you are able to give once the work on the nib has been done.

Also, i did note the measurements, but could you give me a comparison pen for size context? Would it be an mb 144, 146 or 149 for instance?

I can't compare directly. Indirectly, I have a MB149 sized pen and the Platinum is smaller.
