Default best way to liquidate collection?

Hey guys! my partner here passed away and im helping his wife sell his sports memorabilia (which was easy for me) and his pen collection. Its a smaller collection but im clueless on pens. i have some reading to do here but was hoping you may be able to help me identify some of the pieces. i know the montblancs those were easy to spot. no clue if any are rare or special. also any tips on selling them? does it make sense to sell individually or as sets? is ebay a good spot for that? I saw a classified section here too. im trying to do the best i can for her. i appreciate your insights!

It looks to be a lovely collection. I know virtually nothing (just jumping in till the knowledgeable people show up) but I see at least 2 MB 149s, a Poe WE ballpoint and what may be a matching Poe - maybe the FP - peeking out. Plus possibly lovely older MBs and a rose gold trim set. And what looks like a couple Auroras. If you let people know where you are, there's undoubtedly someone in your neck of the woods who could help. And I'd stay away from ebay, at least at first. Ebay is a mixed bag and could be dangerous for someone inexperienced.

P.S. I would take more photos with pens in single file, not jumbled on top of each other. There are folks here who can tell you *exactly* what you have in that case.

Easiest way do to that is to get that line up over a sheet of paper where you would identify each pen by a sequential number. Be sure to remove the cap of each pen so we can see if it's a fountain pen or a roller ball.

    Should be a fun game!

I think I see a Parker Duofold in the mix. Is it a Big Red? Also what appear to be a couple of vintage Shaeffers. Should be easy to sell most of these, you just need to make them a bit more identifiable with some individual close up pics.

I see part of your name is Cleveland. Are you located near there? I believe there is a pen club near there and people in it would be able to guide you.

    A: It can be.
M: No it can't. An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.
    A: No it isn't.
M: Yes it is! It's not just contradiction.
A: Look, if I argue with you, I must take up a contrary position.
M: Yes, but that's not just saying 'No it isn't.'

The best way to maximize will be to identify the models, find recently sold examples on the forums/eBay, and price them accordingly. Gotta sell one by one.

    It'll take time, however
Taking nice pics and listing a pen for sale, excluding the research needed to properly price/describe it, will be about 10 minutes/pen.

Wow, that's some collection! Anyways, if you want a no mess, no fuss, least hassle solution to your problem, contact Teri Morris at Peyton Street Pens. She buys entire collections. You will of course get <50% of the value of all the pens but then you won't have to do the work of multiple close-up photographs of each pen, checking for flaws or damages, making repairs, getting it set up for ebay or on a fountain pen website, dealing with sellers and possible returns, etc. Just depends on how much work and time you want to put into the sale of each pen.

BTW, if you do decide to try and contact her, your best bet is to wait until Tuesday. This weekend is the big San Francisco Pen Show and she will be attending that as a seller.

    All the Best.

    I agree wholeheartedly with junglejim.
Let someone experienced with all pen brands look at them with a view to selling them on your behalf.
If you are inexperienced with pen brands it would probably take you years to sell them all individually and it's a minefield trying to sell them on ebay.

The Sheaffers are actually fairly new Balance 2s. The only Duofold I see is also a new one, looks to be a Centennial and not a Big Red.

If you wish to sell these as a whole collection, the advice you have previously been given to take them to your nearest pen show, or online pen seller, or auction house that sells pens, will serve you best.

You won't be able to sell all of these individually yourself without any knowledge of what you have, or their values, and I very much doubt that someone on here is going to come up with a list of everything there, including it's value, as there are just too many pens for someone to do that.

You have some quite valuable pens in there so getting them all in front of an expert is the best way to go.

I’m very sorry for your loss.

I wonder about my collections when I go. I don’t have many, a few books and a few pens, but I realize it puts an added task on those I leave behind.

It is the same with me, especially for those things that have been handed down to me. Sometimes I think I should label items and say such things as 'dont throw this away, its a first edition Jane Austen'. I think some distant cousin that I have never met will come in and empty the house so that it can be sold, I find this quite concerning.

When you have your Will prepared, ask your lawyer what to do with personal property that you deem valuable but others may/do not, and when to do it. The mistake is waiting while under the impression that there's always more time.

Made rather more difficult when there is no next of kin.
