Default Ink Review: Pilot Iroshizuku fuyu-gaki (Winter Persimmon)

Today I’m reviewing Pilot Iroshizuku fuyu-gaki ink.
From Japanese this translates to Winter Persimmon and is a lovely reddish orange colour.

Fuyu-gaki is an unusual colour. It’s neither orange nor pink. It matches the colour of a ripe persimmon fruit vey well. The nearest ink I could find to compare it to was Diamine Coral.

It didn’t suffer from any hard starts or non-starts when I put the uncapped pen down to do swab tests, dry times and water resistance.

It dried very quickly within 6-8 seconds on the Clairefontaine Triomphe paper and didn’t smear after it was dry.

Available in attractive Pilot Iroshizuku 50ml or 15ml glass bottles from many outlets worldwide.

    • Flow Rate: Excellent - wet.
    • Lubrication: Excellent - felt very smooth across the page.
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Saturation: Not saturated
    • Shading Potential: Some nice shading seen.
    • Show-Through: Some seen on the extra papers I used.
    • Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Seen on Maruman Mnemosyne paper.
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen, even after several days in the pen.
    • Staining (pen): Not seen after several days - easy clean-up.
    • Staining (hands): Washed off of my hands easily.
    • Clogging: Not seen.
    • Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof, but shows a little water resistance.

No interest in that ink, but I applaud your effort. Thanks.

It looks like a good alternative to Noodler's Apache Sunset although NAS probably shades more.

I'm afraid that a Noodler's Apache Sunset is an ink I've never had a sample of so can't compare the two together. Dragon's Napalm looks quite close.

My chilli sauce is much more red, but yes it might be similar to sweet and sour sauce.

This has been a favorite since my first days of buying ink. It deserves the exposure given it by your excellent review.

I remember it is a favourite of yours, and when The Writing Desk asked me if I wanted to review a few P.I. inks for them I specially asked for a sample of this one.
Thank you and you're welcome to the review.

Thanks Chrissy! Fuyu-gaki and Caran d'Ache Electric Orange are my Fall colors. This thread just reminded me to pull them out of the sample vial racks for October inking.

You're welcome. That reminds me, I think I still have a little of Caran d'Ache Colours of the Earth Saffron that I should use up.

    You're welcome.

My Pilot Custom 74 is a fairly wet pen. Must try fuyu-gaki in there.
