Default Old Eversharp with a strange rod inside the ink sac.

I'm just learning and gaining experience repairing old pens and have successfully done a few Eversharps with lever fill. But a couple of weeks ago I removed the section from one and the ink sac I found inside was largely intact, but twisted and no longer attached to the section. Inside the ink sac was a thin rod, approximately the length of the sac and made of plastic I think. This was about pen number 3 for me and I had never seen such a thing. Being unable to figure out why it was there I concluded that some previous owner may have stuck it in there trying to straighten out the ink sac. So I got rid of it, put a new sac in the pen and called it "good". It wrote very nicely.

Now to the present. I found the same thing again on a different pen yesterday. So it must be that the rod is original equipment and was meant to be there. Can anyone tell me what it is for? And how do I proceed now to restore the pen? I did notice a small hole in the back of the section into which this rod might fit before I put a new sac in.

    Thanks for any possible wisdom!

    Steve

I had a Moore fingertip with the same concept. The rod was inserted into a hole in the back end of the feed, and the sac was slipped over the back end of the section with the rod inside the sac. I haven't researched this, but I speculate the rod was intended to improve ink flow into the feed.

It's not a rod. It's a breather tube and it helps fill the sac completely by pushing the air from the top when the sac is compressed. Without it you may get gushing and burping as ink will travel through the passage that is meant to be occupied by the tube.

I commend you for your attempt to restore your own pen. Well done. But rather than plow forward in ignorance when you encounter something unfamiliar I suggest you do some simple and easy web searching. Richard Binder alone has marvelous information and some step by step guides that can save you time, trouble and from embarrassing ink stains.

The Moore did not have a tube.

A Skyline, among other Eversharp pens, does.

Yep, I've had Eversharps with breather tubes, very similar to Parker Vacs.

The rod is there to break surface tension of the ink. I've seen both tubes and rods.

I should add that in the Moore, the "rod" was actually more like a very narrow strip of corrogated brass, such that the end would look like a ~ or w. (Center, in photo below.) The back end of the feed had a slit for that strip.

That, is not your typical Moore pen

Maybe one day you'll post more photos and facts about that pen, Fred.

Alas, a "Mrs. Moore" in Florida snagged the stickered pen and pencil set, so I cannot add much more. It was a lovely pen, with a firm M nib. Though sold, there're still photos in its classifieds listing.
