Try a Sovereign II. It is a lever filler with a two-tone conical turned-up nib. The cap has a metal lip. It is not a thin model. Gold vermeil furniture. Mine is a superb writer.

Valiant made in 1941 - 1945. Lever filler and a two-tone standard up-turned nib. Has a metal band on the cap but not smack-dab on the lip. Gold vermeil furniture. Not thin. Military clip. Mine is a superb writer.

Vigilant made in 1941 - 1945. Same as the Valiant but a little thinner. Nib not turned up.

The gold vermeil will tarnish in time. The underlying silver atoms migrate through the gold and oxidize black. This can be cool; the pen will eventually turn all black and become a stealth pen.

I use these pens all the time. In my opinion, no other pens need apply for space in my pen cup.

For 200 USD you can pick up an expertly restored OS vac-fill Sentinel with a two-tone triumph nib. Your grandchildren will still be writing with it.

I've not seen one, at that price or any other. Links? (My google-fu is not great today)

    Easy task.
    Sheaffer's Imperial II

Sheaffer's Imperial II by C.M.Z, auf Flickr

OK -Like the triumph style conical nibs; especially the ones in two-tone, though this is not essential.
OK -Dislike inlaid nibs. Mainly because my usual writing style is forefinger up, which places the finger actually on part of the nib.
OK -Prefer touchdown fillers to snorkels, though this is not a deal-breaker.
OK -Never tried a vac-fill/plunger or whatever they are called.
OK -Not really interested in lever fillers or cartridge systems.
OK -Nib - a stub would be nice (in my dreams) but anything from accountant to broad works (assuming that medium and broad are amenable to being stubbed).
OK -Metal cap, or at least a metal cap lip, as my Balance experience suggests some material may be prone to cap lip cracks.
OK -Would prefer not to go with a TM model.

Did you not have any luck with Gerry Berg? He has a sterling reputation, with many people here, myself included, who will vouch for him.

I would much prefer to deal with someone like Gerry than random ebay sellers.

The other option would be Ron Zorn; he has some beautiful Sheaffers up at the moment: http://www.mainstreetpens.com/pensales.htm

I recently sent two posters in a mailing tube to AU and it was $23.00. I don't believe your $15 price is correct for parcels, possibly only letter mail. If one wants to add insurance - which a seller certainly would want to do - it may cause an even higher price. I did everything I could to keep the price low for the person I was sending to, but in the end one has to either pay the price or simply not send it, as it was nothing within my power to control.

The golden brown one? That's a very handsome pen. I think you should find some money somewhere...

As to the shipping/postage, I just mentioned what it cost me. I doubt it matters state-to-state, as this is an international issue. Mayhaps it also had something to do with me sending to AU rather than NZ, which would be nice for your side of things.

As noted earlier, I don't know anything about Gerry Berg, beyond the reputation people mention here (and I am not knocking that). Is it usual to just email and ask for stuff? Normal etiquette? I have very little experience of contact with pen people outside of eBay.
Yes. He has an account here (he posted in the thread I linked to above), but invites people to email him directly. He's old school.

As an aside, when checking (quickly) rates with USPS, I noted that a Flat-Rate Small Box Priority Mail is $37.00. Many eBay people are very tied into USPS accounts and flat rate priority is very common, as it makes packing and shipping and charging much quicker and knowable. To find a rate for 1st class package, the only way cheaper, would have required me to input the package dimensions and weight, which I didn't have an example of.

Which is only to say that your original quote wasn't a number picked out of thin air, but the common way the person ships, and probably doesn't do international on any kind of regular basis. It initially seemed high to me, but now I know why it was that amount.

I would guess that your father’s pen has a medium nib.

In my experience, vintage Sheaffer fines run narrower than modern fines.

Congrats. That'll be an excellent pen for years to come, especially after Gerry does the filler. He's done a number of my pens, including the one on the left below, which I believe is identical to yours:

Yes, that's a different A88 but such nice pens. As to the Sheaffer, one of the best parts about the top tier from that era - Parker, Sheaffer, Wahl, etc - is that if they haven't had really bad storage conditions, the hardware tends to clean up so nicely. The one I have in my photo came with the trim looking almost black, but it was just patina. A minute or two with a simple jewelers cloth and it was gleaming. The celluloids are similar in how they can clean up and when Gerry does the seals with new (and modern) materials it will be a wonderful pen. Don't worry about the dents and dings, that's just character.
