    Default Suggestion for a Friend

    Hello all,

So over a month ago I came on here searching for a quality pen and I got one! A restored American made Sheaffer with a custom 1mm cursive italic nib. I have yet to come here and share pictures and opinions on it but rest assured that post is coming soon, been a bit crazy around here lately. Anyways a friend of mine has noticed my new pen and wanted one as well.

My pen cost a hair over $100 which im learning is actually a really good deal and I could have paid much more for that pen. She has never had a fountain pen before and was looking for something more... entry level. Like I did buy purchasing the parker jotter fountain pen as my first pen. I told her many of the entry level pens write more like markers than fountain pens but said I would ask here about any cheaper beginner pens that might write on the wetter side. I know it wont be as nice as the Sheaffers style but just something better than the glorified markers that are the cheap pen world. She is just trying to get her foot in the door and see if this is for her.

    Thanks all,
    -A

Look for one of the Sheaffer cartridge (AkA School) pens. I've never found one that was not a joy with which to write. Here is a set of the first version barrels but wrong caps (third version). And another bunch with the right cap and barrel on the clear ones but again a mixture on the other two (second generation body but third generation caps).

Pilot Metropolitan and Lamy Safari are often lauded and with good reason. I have had a few examples of each.

Kaweco Sport is another good one.

Pilot Kakuno although I find the grip a bit too thick.

For ultra budget, Wing Sun 3008 or Jinhao 51A (hooded nib only).

I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the Wing Sung 601 2019 version for less than $20 on Amazon or $14 on EBay.

If you want a reliable option Pilot, Wing Sung, PenBBS, are all good deals.
If you want more variety in your writing style probably Kaweco can easily bring this since they are still preserving their speciality nibs and it's easy to find them (BBs, italics, etc) and not that expensive.

    Don't start.

In two years time, your friend will be ordering a 2nd Nakaya because the 1st one has not yet, and they are not sure they've ordered the correct nib.

And it will all be your fault.
