Default Waterman Obsession Blue, NOT Mysterious Blue!

Yep, after I posted a thread exclaiming that Mysterious Blue was back, several people kindly pointed out that so far as they knew it had never gone away. Anyway, I'd ordered some, and when it arrived I was dismayed to discover it looked nothing like the ink that I really liked that had disappeared from existence right about the time I discovered it. So I went back and did some digging around, and discovered that it wasn't Mysterious Blue, it was Obsession Blue. It's a dark teal, almost a blue-black with a greenish cast to it.

Obsession Blue had been previously called South Sea Blue, then it was re-released as a "limited edition" called Obsession Blue, and now the limited edition has run its course. Dang.

If anyone has a full or almost full 50 ml. bottle of it they'd like to sell (or trade), please PM me.

    Thanks!!

Please read my comment in your original thread. Are you absolutely certain that the ink you seek isn't Inspired Blue?

It's definitely not Mysterious Blue as that's completely different.

I think we have the answer from Jon: Obsession Blue was the same as South Seas Blue and that's now Inspired Blue

The official Waterman web-site says "Rediscover the Waterman Inspired Blue ink and allow your imagination to flow in a wave of Blue Obsession." From that we can probably assume they are the same colour.

Have Waterman ink bottles changed, or just the labels?

I have South Seas Blue and Inspired Blue and the bottles are the same. Therefore it's just the labels that have changed.

The online swabs I've seen show Inspired Blue to be a bright turquoise, but the small international cartridges of Obsession Blue that I once had (they were sent to me by mistake at the time) were an almost blue-black with a greenish cast; nowhere near turquoise. That's why I got confused when I read somewhere that South Sea Blue, Obsession Blue and Inspired Blue were the same colour.

Is Inspired Blue in fact a turquoise, or is it a greenish dark blue? Could someone please post a writing sample? I'll try to post a writing sample from one of my last carts when I get a chance.

    Many thanks, all!

If you simply do a Google image search on the ink name you'll see a number of examples of writing and swabbing.

Curiouser and curiouser... I put one of my last cartridges marked "Obsession Blue" into a clean fountain pen just now, and dang if the writing sample didn't look turquoise! Maybe I hadn't cleaned out the other pen, the one I first used it in, as well as I thought I had? Ooooo, that's a scary thought!

I wonder if a couple of funky carts found their way into the box? You'd think they'd all be the same if were something like that. I do recall reading a review from someone who said that the ink was supposed to be turquoise, but their's was so dark it looked almost black. So maybe it was a weird batch. I once saw a video about ink manufacturing that showed zillions of cartridges in a vat that fed the machine that inserted them in boxes, so maybe you would get a mix and match result if a funky batch got mixed in with the others.

Hmmmm. A mystery in a conundrum wrapped up in a paradox...

I had a carton of Montblanc Royal Blue cartridges that, after roughly 15 years, were indistinguishable from Blue Black...

    Waterman blues:

For the fun of it, I cut and pasted from the Waterman nib page that Chrissy linked (above), and from Anderson's ink tool. Note that it seems the Waterman samples are not true scans, but just digital representations of the hues.

    In order:

    Mysterious Blue, Serenity Blue,
    Inspired Blue, Blue Obsession and
Anderson's ink tool (where there's no mention of Obsession).

Perhaps none of these are accurate!

South Seas Blue now Inspired Blue is turquoise. Maybe you had some old ink left in the feed of your pen? Mysterious Blue is blue-black and Serenity Blue is more of a royal blue.

    In my mind...

Cut to flashback scene some years ago. Location: waterman ink factory. Wide angle shot of ink vat and long line of cartridges transported one by one to the fill machine and on to the end where they are boxed. A person standing over boxes being filled.

Slow zoom to where cartridges are being filled rapidly. Suddenly new cartridges are no longer appearing. It is the end of this run.

Camera follows the final cartridges along the line to the end where they are inserted into boxes where Joe stands overlooking the packing.

Cut to tight zoom of a box labeled Obsession Blue partially filled with only 3 cartridges.

Cut to Joe portrait. "oh crap" face.

    Joe: "Sacre Bleu!"

He looks around nervously over both shoulders then pauses, looking horrified. He begins looking around all over the floor. His head locks in position. He's found what he was looking for.

Cut to tight zoom of a few dusty cartridges, obviously a totally different color, that have fallen under one of the machines.

Cut to tight zoom of Joe's face. An evil smile slowly creeps across his face (ref grinch).

Cut to zoom shot of the small box loaded with mismatched cartridges being closed by Joe's finger. Follow box and joe places it in the cardboard case. Zoom back to reveal case is on a rolling cart, continue zoom back to wide angle shot of factory with endless machines and corridors as Joe closes the box and begins to push it slowly off into the distance (ref Indiana Jones)

    End scene.

    And that's how it happened.

Joe? Not Joe, never. Say it ain't so, Joe! Maybe Tom or Dick, maybe even Harry... but I'll never believe it was Joe!

(Besides, the ink I got was a very dark teal, which apparently Waterman doesn't make.)
