Anderson, Ron Zorn (Mainstreet Pens), and Indy Pen Dance sell all sorts of repair goodies that you won't find at your local hardware store or drug-store. Also look for tools and such. Rubber grippers are handy, and so is a long dentist's pic...just the thing for scraping dead sac from lever-fillers.
When to stop buying tools? You will hit a point where the tool is more expensive than the repair. Professionals will use their tools hundreds of times a year, but not those of us who merely want to write with a fountain pen. I stopped after I bought a heat gun, for instance.
I don't mind scratches -- they just show that the pen has worked for a living.

Update: So I got the hood apart, and to my horror, the collector was missing some of the fins. Now are the collectors from a 51 aero and a 51 vac cross compatible?

The collectors are the same. You should be fine without those few fins.
