Default Restored Pelikan 140 - what inks should I choose?

I have a Rick Propas restored Pelikan 140 that will be on the way to me soon (after the LA Pen Show) and wanted to know which inks I should choose from. Here's a partial list of the inks that I have. Color wise, I'm leaning toward one of the blues.

    Lamy Blue
    Pelican 4001 Royal Blue
    Visconti Bleu
    Pilot Iroshizuku asa-gao
    Montblanc Permanent Blue
    Sheaffer Skrip Red
    Diamine Syrah
    Private Reserve Invincible Blue

I've used Pelikan 4001 Violet & Royal Blue in mine and a few others over time - can't remember which, though! I've a KF nib on mine and the Violet was particularly nice.

    Hi GC

    --------------------------------------------------

I don't specifically have a 140 but in my Pelikan M400N pens I regularly use Pelikan 4001 Dark Green and R&K Alt Goldgrün inks.

I use washable blues and iron gall blue blacks in my vintage Pelikans. To avoid staining, i don’t put purples or reds in them. Greens and blacks are probably alright, but i don’t like writing with green or black inks.

If you haven't tried it yet, iro. asa-gao is definitely worth a try. It and iro. yama-guri are my main go-to inks.

I have that. It may be my first ink.

I suggest you don't use Montblanc Permanent Blue in your 140. While this is a truly wonderful ink it will slowly but surely leave a residue that will stain the inside of the ink barrel. This residue can be cleaned but it's not easy.

Don't ask me how I know...

I recommend this ink for use only on pens with converters.

Given your concern about staining your new old pen, use one of the first three inks on your list. When in doubt, the safe choice is black or blue ink labeled for fountain pen use that comes from a major pen manufacturer.

Thanks. I'm going to avoid using my permanent inks in the Pelikan (Noodler's, Mont Blanc Permanent, and Private Reserve Invincible Blue).

Of course, Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black, albeit mildly iron-gall, would be safe with the 140. After all, the original B-B labelled as 'ferro'gallic' was still abundant when the pens were first introduced.

I ink mine with Sailor Doyou. Seems to be doing fine.

I'm very cautious and stick to the "classics" from the big pen makers. I've gone through bottles and bottles of Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black, Waterman Blue-Black/Mysterious Blue and Waterman Florida/Serenity Blue.

    Blues:
Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue (if you need a "dry" ink)
Waterman Florida/Serenity Blue (if you need more a wet or "normal" flowing ink)
P.W. Akkerman Royal Blue (if you need a wet ink)

    Blue-Blacks:
Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black (if you like a "dry" ink with traditional characteristics)
Waterman Blue-Black/Mysterious Blue (if you like a little more green-blue tint)
Diamine Prussian Blue (if you like a grey-tinted ink that is dry)

    Green:
Waterman Green (if you want a blue-green)

Of the above inks, the Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue, the Waterman Serenity Blue, and the Waterman Mysterious Blue are the mildest. The most traditional is the Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black.

Don't know about Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black as I believe it has iron gall it it. I've got 4001 RB.

Visconti ink is nice but I can only refill my pens from one of their bottles if I make sure I leave it inside it's plastic case base to be sure it's stable.

The iron gall component in the 4001 Blue-Black would not concern me in a 140. What would concern me more is if an ink had a known propensity to stain or had a very alkaline pH.

I have a Pelikan 140 and a 400NN. They seem to like any ink I use. I ignore Noodler's special formulations and various super-permanent inks and the gimmick inks, such as the glitters. Otherwise, anything goes...

Current favorites: old Parker Quink (mid-50s with Solv-X), nearly any Diamine, several Monteverde inks (Horizon Blue, Sapphire, Ocean Noir), the beautiful Iroshizuku Asa-gao, various Edelsteins.

...and once you've tried Asa-gao, you will be hooked. The most beautiful blue, well-behaved, just saturated enough.

I use primarily Pelikan 4001 Blue Black in my Propas restored 140.
