Default Ink Review: Pilot Iroshizuku yama-budo (Crimson Glory Vine)

Today I’m reviewing Pilot Iroshizuku yama-budo ink. This translates from Japanese to Crimson Glory Vine and is a bright deep magenta colour.

Although this colour may be a bit bright for some users, I think it’s fun to use some bright colours like this when writing letters or pages in journals.

I wrote mainly with a Lamy Al-Star pen with medium steel nib. Flow was good and felt neither wet nor dry, while lubrication at the nib tip was nicely smooth across the page. I thought it was a well-behaved ink.

Yama-budo isn’t a saturated ink but it exhibited a little shading with finer nibs and I noticed a bit of greenish sheen with broad nibs and coated paper.

    • Flow Rate: Very good.
    • Lubrication: Nicely smooth.
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Saturation: Not saturated
    • Show-Through: Some seen on the cheaper additional papers I used, but I could write on the reverse of all of them.
    • Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Not seen
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen, even after a couple of weeks in the pen.
    • Staining (pen): Not seen after several days - easy clean-up.
    • Staining (hands): Washed off of my hands after three washes.
    • Clogging: Not seen.
    • Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof, and shows little water resistance.
    • Available in 50ml or mini 15ml glass bottles from many outlets worldwide.

Thank you, Chrissy. As you say, very bright but it's nice to cheer up a letter with a wild ink. Somewhat tempted...

You're welcome. It would brighten up a paragraph or two in a letter. Compared with most of the slightly lighter comparison inks, it looks almost restrained.

    Chrissy,
It's almost been a year passing for this ink report that you started. Sorry for digging it up.
I bit the bullet and purchased a bottle of this Crimson Glory Vine Yama-Budo by Pilot. Got it in the mail today.
I am not a regular fan by any means who uses crimsons/reds but this one definitely has lots of class. Using TomoRiver paper it really shows the Gold sheen when the light hits it. Nice touch. I am running a Noodlers Ahab flex nib fountain pen full of this ink right now and testing it on various f/p friendly papers (Rodia, MD Notebook journal, Leuchtturnm and of course TomoeRiver- Notepads and loose sheets.
    Keep up the good reports,
and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
    Cheers from Canada,
    VT

It's no problem at all to refer to any ink reviews any time you like. That's what they are there for.
I recently saw the TWSBI 700 Vac Iris pen on a Zoom meeting for the Lone Star Pen Club and wondered if this ink might match the clip.
Thank you for your greetings and I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a much happier 2021.
