The trouble with democracy is that 'here today and gone tomorrow' politicians can have such a long lasting effect if they manage to convince half the population that what they have to say has some merit, even if they tell lies when advocating their half baked ideas.
This is the Chinese Dinner school of democracy, quite tasty whilst you are having it but 30 minutes later you realise that you are still hungry.
