Default Is my Montblanc pen genuine

Hi purchased a Mont Blanc meisterstuck ball point pen from an auction site. The pen arrived with an empty refill. When I took the pen to a Mont Blanc shop for refill replacement the salesman advised the refill felt tight to screw in. When they checked serial number they advised serial number is eight characters and not nine. They were unsure if pen was genuine and said I have to send it off. Is there anyway to determine authenticity without sending this as I’ll need to get back to the auction house if product is not genuine.

Auction sites are notorious for selling MB fakes, especially ball points and again if there is no box or documentation then my suspicions would be on red alert. at the risk of sounding biased, if the seller was from China, the home of the fake MB, then that would cap it for me.

Try Googling the serial number and see what comes back.

The odd part of your story is that the MB shop could not tell you if the pen was fake or not, you can usually tell instantly.

There are also several Youtube vids on the subject, here is just one.

Finally, try taking a magnet to the gold trim on the plastic cap, this isnt a surefire answer but if it sticks then again you have a problem.

I would normally say 'Pics would be good' but if you have already been in the shop and they dont know then you would have thought that the appearance of the pen is spot on.

There is no way to determine if the pen is genuine but perhaps it can be determined that it is a fake. First is to do a web search on the serial number. If it's a fake there's a good chance that it will show up multiple times. Next get get good closeup images of the pen and post them here.

I could not find any hits on the serial no. Hope this is a good sign. Is a typical serial number two alphanumeric charactors followed by by 7 numeric digits?

If the Montblanc boutique couldn't fit an authentic refill into the pen then it would suggest the pen wasn't authentic. Did they actually screw a new refill into your pen or not?

It's impossible to determine authenticity from the pictures as many replica Montblanc Meisterstück RB pens look like that. In fact replicas of this pen are now near perfect. I believe that only Montblanc will know if that serial number and therefore your pen is authentic. Unless the boutique couldn't screw in a refill, in which case it's definitely not.

I don't see anything that cries out "FAKE".

Me neither, but Montblanc refills easily fit into Montblanc RB pens.

    Hi
The refill did fit into the pen. I’ll send the pen to MontBlanc to validate the pen.

Seems like authenticity costs $72 (probably because it's so common to ask if it's real).

$72 sounds like a high price to pay for validation. How about if you ask them to personalise it and they tell you they can't because it's not authentic?

    Must be "precious validation".

About the only way today to validate authenticity would be a really detailed physical and chemical analysis that could take hours, days, maybe weeks. $72.00 sounds cheap for that effort.

I doubt they go that far.

But yea it does sound a bit high for the basics, especially as most of the counterfeits aren't that good a copy, and likely cost as low as the validation cost. Makes more sense if you spent like 4 grands on a pen that could be the work of forgery (in which case it's a steal as you said).

    Aren't you smart :3

I wonder when they started charging for that (let alone enforced it).

I tried to think of something that might work
I wonder if they decided to charge for it because there are so many to authenticate that it now needs an extra employee to do that job? Who knows whether they always enforce it or not?? I wonder if the charge is the same if it is sent in by a Montblanc store? If they keep and destroy those pens that are fake and the store has nothing to give back to the customer maybe they won't charge?

It's been my understanding, at least in the US they're not legally allowed to destroy a customer's property, counterfeit or not. As I recalled someone had one authenticated in order to file a claim against a seller on eBay, with the letter they got from Montblanc (along back with his fake pen), eBay immediately found in favor of the buyer and refunded the money. When he inquired about needing to return the pen or send it as evidence they just said not to worry about it since it's worthless anyways (not even requiring proof of destruction/etc).
