Default Ink Review: Diamine Monboddo's Hat

Today I'm reviewing Diamine Monboddo’s Hat

A purple ink from the standard range, Diamine Monboddo’s Hat was chosen and named by the Fountain Pen UK community on Facebook in a survey co-ordinated by Bernard Gomes.

James Burnet, Lord Monboddo (1714-1799) was a Scottish judge and philosopher who traced the natural history of man, exploring the origins of society and language. He wore a purple hat that the colour of this ink is based on.

This ink is an Imperial purple shade that leans very slightly red. It was neither particularly wet nor dry, and it felt smooth and lubricated on my Xerox ColourPrint laser 100gsm paper.

It can sheen faintly golden yellow when writing on smooth papers with pens that have broader, wetter nibs.

    • Flow Rate: Good.
    • Lubrication: Smooth.
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Saturation: Reasonably saturated.
    • Shading Potential: A little shading seen.
    • Sheen: Golden yellow sheen sometimes noticeable.
    • Show-Through:
      • Oxford,80gsm lined pad
      • Rhodia Dot Pad
      • Tomoe River 52gsm paper
      • Maruman Mnemosyne pad

    • Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Not seen.
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen, even after over 1 week in the pen.
    • Staining (pen): No staining remained in the converter after cleaning it out.
    • Staining (hands): My fingers were clean after one wash.
    • Clogging: Not seen. Seems unlikely.
    • Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof, but shows a little water resistance.
    • Availability: Available from Diamine Inks web-site and many other outlets.
