    Default This Squirrel is Hilarious

Yes I know there are several YouTube videos available of squirrels sliding down greased bird feeder poles, but a) this one is on Reddit and has no adverts at the beginning, and b) it's particularly funny how slowly it goes down after making such a huge effort to get to the feeder at the top then just giving up.

    Sooo familiar!

Eventually, the squirrels figured out that when you slide down the pole often enough, the grease rubs off.

I bought what was described as a squirrel proof bird feeder, all metal, substantial thing it was, the lid clipped down with some force and there was an elaborate hook to secure the feeder. I looked forward to the birds coming to feed from my kitchen window. Could believe it when I saw a squirel climb a tree, drop down ontp the feeder, unhook it faster than I managed to hook it and then drop to the ground, I raced outside, the squirrel wasnt going to sit there and eat a pound of nuts on the ground, he was taking the whole lot away, I shouted 'Shooo' at him, he just looked over his shoulder at me with a look that said, whats your problem, I have earned this, and off he went.

Must admit to a great deal of prejudice, a red squirrel and I would be putting out fruit, walnuts and almonds and anything they wanted, grey squirrels - not so much.

A red squirrel here and we would be doing the same. Plus we could probably make money from people lining up down the road to catch a glimpse of such a rarity.

Deb do you get red squirrels in your garden?

Understood. The greys are an invasive species. Just hope they don't breed with the reds.

They don't interbreed, but greys carry a virus that kills reds, and they outcompete reds for food. Reds have been pushed further and further north and Scotland is the main UK Country where they can be seen. In England they can only be found on the Isle of Wight and Brownsea Island. I believe Anglesey has recently been declared grey squirrel free but whether there are reds there or not I'm not sure.

Neither red nor grey squirrels here - too far north. I think the northenmost habitat for either is around Inverness. There has been a lot of work done to reintroduce reds in the places where the greys drove them out. The Wildlife Trust says both are around Edinburgh now. When my husband lived there some years ago there were only greys.

    They don't interbreed.

I've seen TV shows based in Scotland where they actively trap greys in order to try to protect the reds.

What do they do with the trapped greys? Send them back to Anerica? Squirrel stew?

Squirrel stew is good stuff. It's one of the first things my grandfather taught me to make in the wild, but it's a lot easier with a slow cooker
Online arguments are a lot like the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
As soon as the audience begins to participate, any actual content is lost in the resulting chaos and cacophony.
At that point, all you can do is laugh and enjoy the descent into debasement.

I've never eaten squirrel, to my eternal regret. I came home one day and the house was filled with a delightful aroma; meaty, yet somehow nutty. I asked what it was and my father showed me two squirrels roasting in the oven. Being about 10 at the time I shrieked in disgust and refused to consider trying them. Missed opportunity. Father said they were delicious.

Well once they have trapped them, they can't be released back into the wild as they aren't a native species so it's for them I'm afraid.

Perhaps there is a business opportunity here. The grey squirrels could be trained for funny YouTube clips.

At a similar age, I once had the same reaction to eating rabbit.

I would hope that could be possible, but due to the virus they carry, it probably is not.

Fried squirrel is yummy. My grandmother used to make it. First she'd cook it in the pressure cooker, and then she would dredge it in flour and fry it.
