    Default Hello from Atlanta

Pretty new to fountain pens. My sister got into them in Japan (I think) and then got me one for Christmas and I’ve been hooked since. I use them as daily writers at an animal hospital as a vet tech. We have paper charts so I write several pages per day. My first pen, the gift, was/is a Pilot Metropolitan M. I bought a Caran D’ache 849 EF but returned it shortly after as I felt the nib was far to scratchy and was actually tearing through paper in some instances. In its place I got a Pilot Prera EF which I like. I’ve got a Lamy with a fine nib that my sister let me borrow. I just bought a Montegrappa Ducale that I’ll post about elsewhere. If all goes well with it then I more than likely won’t buy anymore. I’m definitely on the user end of the spectrum and don’t much care for a huge collection unless there is a specific use intended. Anywho...

Welcome! What kind of ink do you like for a work pen?

That’s been a tough one for me. I write on quite a bit of regular printer paper but mostly on a much heavier paper made specifically for our charts. I also wrote quite a lot of prescriptions and the ideal ink would be water fast. I’m not too hung up on that part. I don’t mind if it’s illegible but I would prefer someone be able to tell that somethings awry. I’m also obsessed with the blue black inks as I’ve never known they were a thing until recently.

So far I’ve tried Noodler’s Navy, Baystate Blue, Blue Black, Borealis Black, and Polar Blue. I’ve also used Rohrer & Klingner Salix, and De Atrementis Black Edition Blue Black. By far my favorite is the De Atrementis. I’m not sure it’s very waterproof but I know it won’t just rinse off immediately. The Baystate blue is great as a regular blue ink but I don’t typically write in blue. The Noodler’s Navy is okay but it depends on the nib and paper. Sometimes it looks like a nice dark blue. Others it has far too much light to dark blue shading, and in my opinion, doesn’t look good for professional use. The Salix is okay but I have pretty consistent flow issues with it. The Noodler’s Blue Black has a great color but it dries FARRRR to slow for work use. It still smudges about a minute or so out. Polar blue has awesome characteristics but the color is just lacking. It’s too washed out. Like a really muted blue. The De Atrementis so far has been great, my only “complaint” is the possible lack of waterproofness.

So long story short I suppose I’m still looking for the perfect blue black, dark blue, or an incredibly black purple. I suppose that’s half the fun though.

As for inks, several here can advise you on the “bullet proof” document inks. I think DeAtramentis has one and it may be like an iron gall ink that’s waterproof. I work in a lab and our hand written work must be legible and smear and water proof...

I haven’t come across a DeAtrementis iron gall yet. I’ll look into that. Diamine has their Blue Black Registrars ink which is an iron gall. I have it on a wish list of inks I’d like to try. I absolutely love the almost greenish hue of the Noodler’s Blue Black and the DeAtrementis Blue Black. I’ve been really looking for something similar that is waterproof. I’ll be looking around here as well.

Welcome I believe that you can mix De Atramentis inks, if you are interested in that. You might find this article useful: https://janeblundellart.blogspot.com...revisited.html
