    Default Manu Propria Pens - "Shôsugiban/Yaki Sugi"

    An experimental Pen with a finish called "Shôsugiban" or simply "Yaki Sugi".
    Originating in 18th century Japan, shou sugi ban is a particularly striking method of preserving wood by charring it with fire. Traditionally, this practice is used with Japanese cedar in order to weatherproof it. The wood is burned until the surface is charred, and then coated with natural oil.     Very cool!

    I have an artisan forged kitchen knife with charred chestnut handles, with the chestnut wood there's a significant difference in the density of the seasonal growth ring layers, so charring not only adds water resistance, but also creates more texture in the wood handle, for a more secure grip.

    Very interesting texture. I like the natural yet precise look of it. Puts my plastic pens to shame.

    Now I come to think of it, there's a sandblasted version of the Platinum 3776 briarwood pen that has a similar texture - but not burned as well.
