Default Youtube Pen Repair - Sources

People often need to fix their pens. Not everyone can send it out and not all repairs need a pro.

Youtube has many people who offer advice and visuals in different aspects of pen repair and restorations. I advise watching as many as possible to get a wide range of viewpoints. Some info may be good, some bad. Make your own judgment.

People are going to try to fix their pens. Give them a point in the right direction.

Watch the videos to see if there's something that may work for you.

    Shawn Newton.

Years ago, his video on how to increase ink flow by caaaaaarefully and sloooooowly cutting into the main feed channel helped me not give up on a lovely pen -- and not feel frustrated with other pens since.

I'd put Dr. Brown (sbrebrown) on this list. His disassembly line videos have helped me a couple of times to make disassembly of a pen non-destructive.

However, now I'm going to be looking up Shawn to see what I can learn.

    I'm adding these three.

    Chrisrap52 - repairing old pens.
Triumph Vintage Pens - Parker 51 restoration.
What I Ink - Esterbrook repairs.

This is a great thread, especially when we're seeing more of our abodes than we normally do.

I just wish I'd brought home some pens, now stuck at the office, that could use some time getting pulled apart and dealt with.

I'm looking forward to it. His opinions are among the best in pendom due to his unassuming love of pens and honesty.

I think it would be a good idea for you to include the actual name of the person doing the repair/presentation, since the title of the vid channel doesn't always give that kind of info. And, as long as you've gone to their channels, why not put a link?

So far Shawn is the only person that I know has a broad and deep enough experience to trust. I get that a segment of society prefers a moving-picture tutorial as opposed to print, but my repair/restoration needs aren't covered by just working on pens from the last 20 years. I'll check out a couple of the ones I haven't heard of before.

People can search on Youtube and discover the fountain pen repair videos. Go to the person's channel and it takes about a minute to go through the 'titles' and it will be evident. I don't know their names, just what they list their channel under. What they call themselves is secondary to what they present. I'm sure you could contact them and if they desire they can tell you who they are.

I, too, love books. But someone showing you on a video as to how, what, and where can speed up the learning. That's the difference between a car mechanic telling you about how to do a valve job and showing you a valve job being done.

Someone showing you how to smooth a nib beats someone telling you how to smooth a nib.

I'm not vouching for the repair credentials of anyone on Youtube. That's the reason I put the disclaimer in the first post. It's up to the viewer to decided the credibility of the person. As you know, there are some who will swear by the repair video and others who will swear at the video.

The same way some people like a pen and others don't and no two reviewers will respond identically.

True, but direct links to YouTube would greatly enhance the utility of the list. Same applies to the list of pen reviewers in the other thread (which could also benefit from being alphabetical — maybe that's just me).

I'm not going that route. It's too easy to go to youtube, search for that channel and there you go.

Ok, your thread and your perspectives.

The only thing is that I know a lot of repair people by name. It would be helpful to have the name of the creator of the video in the listing, not unlike it is common and considerate to put the author when listing a book or article. Yes, people can certainly do it on their own, of course.

It may be helpful to you, but most people want the information and they don't care what the creator's real name is. I don't.

I'm trying to be helpful with this listing, not create an encyclopedia of pen repair or pen reviewers and their backgrounds.

Take it for what it is. A listing.

Fair enough, I don't want another argumentative thread.

    Caveat emptor, and repairer.

Most of the pen repair advice on YouTube is terrible.

Can you give examples? Which ones are terrible? Why are they terrible?

Who do you think is good? Why are they good?

Everyone would like to know. Otherwise, it's a one-liner toss-off that is of no value.

    Cheers.

I admire your work, ethics, and ability to teach. That's exceptional and very much 'list worthy.' Continued success to you.
