Has my 10-year-old kid ever mentioned it during conversation? She is bright, but just regular when it comes to botany.

With my limited knowledge of 12-year old girls and your's in particular, I hesitate to guess the words used by your daughter. That said, I would not say no. Nor would I say yes.

put an other way: would you expect a regular-ass 10 year old to know about this plant? is it a commonly-known or talked-about kind of thing?

Hint: They were collected to to the point that they had become endangered in the wild. They are now grown in greenhouses for propagation and sale.

    Orchids?
    Or maybe specifically Ghost orchid?
I realised that it is probably US specific so I'll say clustered sedge

    14) Definately not Orchid, #8 established that it was not best known for its flowers even though it has them.
14a) Not clustered sedge. I will also add that I believe that it is US specific, particularly eastern wetlands.

Ok, I guess it's time for hints.

    Kingdom: Plantae aka Vestibule
    Phylum: Anthophyta from guess (8)
Class: Magnoliopsida; this is new info
Order: Caryophyllales; but not cacti ala guess (10)

Bonus hint: The family has been included in the APG classification system since it was first published in 1988.
