Why?
Prices went up.
I remember Coke going from 5cents to 6cents.
Stamps going from one cent to one and a quarter cents and then one and a half cents and then two cents.
Four for five cents? A different time, for sure.
But like the coke example, a really big price increase.

I remember 1½ cent stamps too, both George and Martha Washington had a 1½ cent stamp as did Harding.
