Default Why were there 1¼¢ stamps in 1967?

I happened upon a bunch of 1¼¢ U.S. Postage stamps at a yard sale. I looked them up and they're from 1967. Isn't that strange?

    Why?

    Prices went up.

I remember Coke going from 5cents to 6cents.

Stamps going from one cent to one and a quarter cents and then one and a half cents and then two cents.

The Postal Workers at my local P.O. had never heard of such a thing.

I remember 1½ cent stamps too, both George and Martha Washington had a 1½ cent stamp as did Harding.

Is the USPS obliged to honor the 1¼¢ value? so 4 stamps = 5¢ ?

Sure if the stamps have not been canceled, but I think the 1¼¢ stamps are worth about 20¢ on the collectors market.
