    Default Sheaffer "Student" pen question

I have attached pictures of a pen I took apart for cleaning. I have a re-assembly question that I hope someone can answer. The "tube" that passes through the center of the section has a thin channel for the ink to flow from the cartridge into the feed. When the feed gets pressed back into the section, does this channel have to line up with anything on the feed?

As a rough guess I would say that it should line up with the channel you see on the front of the feed that is covered by the nib.
My reasoning is you want to make it easy for the ink to get to the nib.

The insert should be pulled out of the section and stuck in the end of the feed before you reassemble the nib unit. Soak over night before you try to soften any dried ink so that it doesn't snap pulling it out of the piercing tube.

The ink travels down the ink channel, and is carried to the forward part of the feed/collector that you see, and then through a slit that runs up to the nib itself. That insert should go into the feed, pushed all of the way in, with the slit UP so that it lines up with the slit in the rest of the feed. Then line up with the nib, and hold them together before setting it into the section. They're a pain to get out again, so check to make sure that everything is lined up properly before you press it home.

Sheaffer used more or less the same design in many nib assemblies from the early 60s until the started making the feeds out of plastic. But even then, the plastic feeds are variations on the theme.
