    I would agree with trying everything else before nib smoothing. If it comes to that it's best to go with your original idea and send the pen to someone with experience. I don't know what modern Pelikan nibs cost but I imagine it would inflict severe wallet-pain if you get it wrong - and that's remarkably easy to do.
