    Question Pilot Nib Sizes

My current grail pen is a Pilot Custom 823. When I go to get one, I have no idea if I would want to get a Fine or Medium.
Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks guys!

Pilot nibs tend to come up finer than the western nibs that I prefer so I always try to go broader with Pilot pens.

You could compare your current nib size with quite some other ones in Brian Goulet’s “nib nook”:

What sort of pens do you use now and what are their nib sizes?

Nibs.com have a good information page on the tipping sizes from different manufacturers.

M: An argument isn't just contradiction.
    A: It can be.
M: No it can't. An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.
    A: No it isn't.
M: Yes it is! It's not just contradiction.
A: Look, if I argue with you, I must take up a contrary position.
M: Yes, but that's not just saying 'No it isn't.'

Well this is a "How long is a piece of string?" question, as we have absolutely nothing to go on. Writing size, preferred nibs in other pens, desired end result, etc etc.

As a rule of thumb I always reckon that you should play to a maker's strengths. As the Japanese brands give the finest lines, get fine nibs in Japanese pens. Save broader widths for Europeans (not including C nibs, where the Japanese appear to go mad, give them as much tipping as they can pile on, and then make a marker pen. Which is a. Fun, and more importantly b. Makes a great basis for a custom grind.) Mediums are for the undecided.

I had a 743 (same nib, cartridge fill) and my Medium was practically the same as my Pelikan Mediums (but they’re 120s, 400s and a 250). I’ve had Kaweco Mediums that are comparable, in gold and steel both. I’ve never used that sized nib in Fine, so I don’t know what the separation is like. The line size separation between Japanese and Continental nib seems to ease in bigger tips.

    Good luck!

What are you using the pen for? Everyday writing? Note-taking? Signatures? Which papers and inks are you using? Simple copy paper vs. *Insert Expensive Paper*?

I've got the whole gamut of modern Pilot nibs, EF-B + FA + WA + PO. I haven't come across a C or M to try but I usually don't like such fat nibs. Tell us more of what you're looking for/want from your pen and nib.

I read somewhere that Pilot nibs are one size smaller than Western nibs. I am not sure if that is correct but it seems to me that it is. My extra fine nib on my Pilot Kakuno is very fine. Hopefully, this is helpful.

Just got an 823 with a fine nib that I've fallen in love with. I had the same concern as you, my Custom 74 is a medium and I feel like it's too wide.
Love the fine on the 823.

I have got many Japanise pens. Sailor Platinum Pilot they're all great nibs.
I like Japanise EF-F and I have a SM too and it is a good Nib.
I have a Nimikie FA EF That is a very delicate and hard nib in most writing. Have a FA custom 912 which is an interesting nib.
If I get a custom 823 it is a M becouse I already have many other nib sizes in all other pens.
For me,, when I want to know about tis pen, I will check out to see what others do with that pen and what it can do suit to your use or style of writing.
