Thanks azkid! I have to admit, I was somewhat going for that slightly italic design when I picked up my Soft Fines...something that would allow greater dimensions on the downstrokes, but in a less exaggerated form. This way, note taking, or even journaling, would still appear reasonably professional. If you wouldn't mind, could you tell me what you are you using for basic writing/taking notes?

Sure thing. My favorites tend to have at least enough give to provide a little line variation that is along the lines of what I think you're describing.

I don't have to do anything special but some of the fast upstrokes particularly low loops (y, j, g, ...) are a size or two thinner than the regular F writing.

So my writing looks professional and not ornate but has a bit more character than you could get with other pens.

Pilot Stargazer in F, Parker 51 Aerometric in F, Montblanc 221 EF, Parker 45 F.

My Parker 21s (the first/second gen not the Supers that are like 51s) are interesting too and seem to have more pronounced line variation. Maybe the nibs are really soft. I don't write with them a lot though so I haven't spent any time figuring it out. They can be drippy. But if they aren't they're nice to write with but look a slightly ornamental.

Another more ornamental nib is the Esterbrook 9314M medium oblique (relief) a left oblique.

My favorite by far is my Vacumatic with a right oblique nib. I think it is a medium or maybe a fine but I really love writing with it. Just not notes as it looks a bit too decorative. But it's great for letters and postcards.

Wow, thanks for the thorough and thoughtful reply Azkid! I definitely have some homework to do now!

Edit: Oh my, most, if not all, of these are definitely classics. I'm going to poke around the web, because I'm definitely intrigued. Thanks again!
