The government response overall to this crisis so frustrating, along with the individuals who still think it is "just the flu". I cannot even remember how many times I have had to ask people to back away from me when I have been in the stores, and the number of people going out without masks is appalling. My mom is 89 and my brother & I have grounded her from going out, she fusses about it, but that is the way it has to be. My dad contracted the virus in the hospital a few weeks ago and died on June 20th. This is such a scary time in our world.
Sorry to hear about your father. It’s tough any time but it has to be worse when you can’t safely mourn in the company of others.

My mother is in Walworth County and has a million health issues. Walworth County isn’t too bad, but she’s had to go in to UW hospital a couple times, most recently last week, just as infections were spiking in Madison. So far so good, though, knock on wood.

This crisis has shown that our political system is not up to the task of dealing with Covid-19. I’d like to say that the people have taken leadership, but i don’t think that would be accurate. Even here in NYC where we heard sirens round the clock people have become lax about masks. I fear we’re in for another wave.

Default July 10th, 2020 in Hidalgo County Texas

Today was another brutal day, not as many testing positive but only one fewer deaths. Today there were another 393 positive cases bringing us to more cases in the first 10 days of July than during ALL of June. Nineteen more deaths brings us to 110 deaths just in 10 days. We had 32 deaths total during March, April, May and June; more than 3 times as many deaths in 10 days of July as during the previous four months.

The new infections are still skewed towards the young and deaths skewed towards the elderly.

Started using refrigerated trucks for overflow morgues.

Using school portable buildings for hospital beds.

Requested 2500 additional health care first responders.

    Continue partying.

A few steps as we learn to live with it.

We have now faced two weeks of July and the results should be sobering.

    In 14 days:

    • 4511 new cases of Covid-19
    • 151 Covid-19 deaths
    • more new cases and deaths than in March, April, May & June combined
    • 840 hospitalzations
    • 223 in ICU
    • over 5000 known active cases

And the restaurants are still open; the churches still gathering; folks on the streets not wearing masks; schools planning on opening but not on campus until late September...

    And the TWIT response?

This is against all medical advise, well how much less are my school taxes going to be then,,,also how much will i get paid to teach I still work my 50+ hours a week
Criminally unjust to students. Where’s your data to prove the risk of transmission from kids to adults ? Who do parents contact to get their property taxes refunded as they now become the teachers ? What the hell does a single working parent do?
Will the little illegal school children still be able to get their free breakfasts and lunches?
Think past the one problem in front of you. And you are willing to create 10 problems to solve 1. You are just simply "reacting" to the mob and their fears for votes.

    Hello JAR -
Thanks for the poignant Covid 19 updates from your Deep South of Texas. It’s so sad that the virus found another vulnerable population to attack. And painful to read as this was likely avoidable if your leadership and citizens had learned from our experience in the Northeast. I find it enlightening as to how uninformed or unaccepting people still are regarding the virus. It also makes me angry because with strong public leadership we could be following the EU path to a “new normal”. Please continue your observations and if there comes a time you can’t take it any more we can offer you shelter in Massachusetts where it’s better but not perfect.

We won't get today's figures until 8 or 8:30 pm but by noon today 35 additional deaths had been reported.

It will not be good news. And still, the Governor will not allow locales to place stricter controls than what he has established. Stores open, restaurants open, businesses open, many churches assembling (mostly the CCoI ones) and the number are there to be seen.

Today was another appalling day. We recorded 1248 new cases and another 22 deaths. There are 867 people hospitalized and 221 in ICU. There are almost 6000 known active cases and the data continues to skew towards the younger people.

That is truly awful jar. We don't have it as bad in our island but today the governor announced a rollback of some of the measures to "open the economy" taken a few weeks back. Seems the only thing that opened up was a new surge of infections.

    Please keep safe.

What should really get peoples attention but does not is that 25% of all the people hospitalized with Covid-19 are in ICU.

This is not just a bad flu.

    Hidalgo County Texas, July 17

    Yet another depressing report.

Another 451 new KNOWN cases. Six thousand eight hundred sixty-one new cases this month so far.

Twenty-seven deaths. Two hundred thirty-five so far this month.

More active cases than released/recovered cases.

    Nine hundred eighty-two hospitalized.

    Three hundred four in ICU.

Governor Abbott said in an interview yesterday that there will not be another closedown in Texas.

Hopefully there will be someone left to turn off the lights.

Cynical thought: Abbott figures most Texas voters want fun and stuff for themselves more than health and life for their families and neighbors, and the Texans that die don't vote. (Insert name of any state governor that puts $$ over health.)

    No where cynical enough.

Our Attorney General compared it to a war and that as soldiers we should be willing to die to keep the State functioning.

    Yet more bad news.

“In our discussions with the Texas governor’s office, they informed us that they are supplementing local hospitals with doctors and nurses. They feel that this is sufficient now to meet the community’s needs,” the organization said in an email Wednesday evening. “Because of this, Samaritan’s Purse will not be deploying an Emergency Field Hospital to McAllen, Texas, at this time.”

Instead, Governor Abbott suggested local hospitals use hotel and motel rooms.

On Thursday, Abbott’s spokesman John Wittman cited the same weather-related challenges Tenpenny had spoken about and indicated the governor’s office instead believes using hotels to house patients is “the best course of action.”

What, a war where the generals put the elderly and infirm on the front lines?

    Wow. M-fucker.

Personnel and equipment really are the limiting factors right now. What we are seeing is that almost one third of all hospitalizations are ICU patients and NO community hospital system is capable of handling such ratios.

Not only are we seeing more sick people we are seeing more critically ill ones.

It is depressing and difficult to live and write. Our Governor is not up for reelection this cycle and I'm not at all sure that he would not get support if he were.
