Default Ink Review: Pilot Iroshizuku momiji (Autumn Leaves)

Momiji is a bright pinkish red ink that translates from Japanese to Autumn Leaves. It’s a vibrant pinkish/magenta red colour, not a fire-engine red.

It’s a well-behaved ink that flowed very well through my pens and felt nicely lubricated to write with. I didn’t notice any skips or hard starts when I put the uncapped pen down to do swab tests, dry times and water resistance. I also didn’t see any feathering on the papers I wrote on. It has some shading and can sometimes sheen gold.

It stained my fingers for at least three hand washes.

Available in attractive Pilot Iroshizuku 50ml glass bottles and 15ml sample bottles worldwide.

    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen, even after a week in the pen.
    • Staining (pen): Not seen after several days - easy clean-up.
    • Staining (hands): It took three washes before my fingers were clean.
    • Clogging: Not seen.
    • Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof but has a little water resistance.

Great review as always! Awhile back someone at a pen posse gave me a Kakuno loaded with this.

I really enjoyed the color and found it fun to use—even though I don't usually (ok, *never*) seek out magenta or pink inks.

I found it was easier to read than I would expect of such a color, too.

You're welcome. I was quite surprised how pink it was.

Lovely review Chrissy. I loved the washing three time comment! I often use a pumice to scrub off ink stains
Though I admit the colour doesn't remind me of autumn at all.....

You're welcome. I absolutely agree with you. Not only did it take me three washes for my fingers to be clean, these washes were done with Lava Soap. That is an abrasive soap bar!
I also wasn't aware the autumn leaves were magenta pink rather than red.

It's funny sometime some none water resistant inks, decide to become waterproof on our skins....

Yes indeed! I should check the chroma tests of both momiji and kosumosu as even kosumosu took me two washes to remove. I wonder if they might contain the same dye?

Maybe the ink is representative of Japanese Maple. Some of the pics I'm seeing of japan in the fall show some colors similar to the ink. Also there's a park called Momijidani Park that may be connected. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti...e_Chugoku.html

Edit: oh, actually momiji means "red leaves". https://simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Momijigari

Makes me want to visit Japan in the fall.

If I ever visit Japan, I would want to see the cherry blossom.

I think it does look like Japanese maples (momiji) in the fall, especially with broader and/or wetter nibs. To me, that’s the appeal.

It is true that Japanese maples, in fall especially when the sun hits the leaves are spectacular, yet to my eyes memories, there is a hint of burgundy and wine and not pink.....Anyway fall is around the corner and many Japanese Maples about, so I would pay more attention to them... though it is difficult with all the other maples, that abound....

I hope it isn't late to respond to this. The original post was from almost seven months ago.

I'm looking at my first bottle ink, and the Momiji is one of the ones at the top of my list. Thank you, Chrissy, for your review! I'm used to the Dull™ and Bland™, and Momiji appears to be anything but that. Quality still matters, however, and your review indicates this could be a nice ink for me.

    Thanks again!
