    Default Dry ink reccomendations!

    Hello,

So I live in the US. We have trash office paper that I use on a daily purpose because of school/work. Anything wet, like iroshizuku will instantly feather a bit even if I am writing with a EF nib or a pilot PO.

I have seen recommendations for Pelikan 4001 inks (brilliant black/blue), but was wondering if you guys had any suggestions.... I am trying to consolidate one order of samples before I order large quantities of anything.

    Thanks in advance!

Iron galls perform exceptionally well on crappy paper. Diamine Registrars is the driest. It is also a beautiful shader. And the colour change as it dries before your eyes is quite mesmerising. Great ink all round.
    Vintage. Cursive italic. Iron gall.

I have also had good luck with Sailor nano-black Kiwa-guro, but it is a pigmented ink, so you would have to not mind that.

As you are already aware, Pelikan 4001 inks are generally considered to be quite dry and some other inks from Germany such as Faber-Castell and Kaweco can be dryer too.

Japanese inks made by Sailor and Pilot tend to be wetter, although I don't experience any feathering problems on cheap envelopes when I'm using a Pilot blue cartridge in my Pilot Capless and that ink is very water resistant.

If you want to use IG or pigment based inks then they might also work well on your office paper.

Lamy Benitoite is iron gall and a pleasing blue grey. Also in general any grey ink tends to be very manageable for multiple purposes.

I would recommend against noodler's inks even though others may like them. I've found that they act as if they have alcohol content with bleed through and strange drying properties. The only one I've tried that behaves nicely is Kiowa Pecan. Lexington Gray is OK but so are all the other brands in gray.

I have Noodler's El Lawerence inked up in an EF ink. I find it dry compared to other Noodler's with EF. If you like the colour it might be an option. It's bulletproof, it doesn't feather. Though you'll have ghosting....
And if you like funky properties it glows under UV

Iron gall, iron gall, iron gall

For example, R&K Salix & Scabiosa, or Pelikan blue black.

I've found Platinum Black* does exceptionally well on poor paper, even newsprint. Wiped the floor with Pelikan 4001, of which usually I'm a great advocate.

*The regular sort, not Carbon Black.

Even Pelikan 4001 blue black? Granted that one can be hard to get in the US. My one issue with Platinum inks is that they’re more expensive than some others.

Califolio inks are pretty dry, but i can’t vouch for their properties on bad paper. My main strategy for dealing with bad paper is just to avoid it.

Hello everyone - thanks for the recommendations.

I generally have nice pens and I hesitate to use iron gall or pigmented. I will try them out on my sailor pro gear tho this weekend when I make my order.

@Guyy I wish I could avoid it but that is what the workplaces uses can't really help it you know?

@notsim I actually got gifted a bottle of Kyonoto black a while back. Didn't really open it cuz I have like 4 others that I have open but I will open it and give it a go!

Looks like I need to get Pelikan Blueblack or black, Platinum Black, and iron galls inks.

For decades Montblanc made an (excellent) iron gall ink. The notion that IGs are somehow "dangerous" is unfounded. Modern iron galls, in particular, are exceptionally well behaved and provide no risk to well made pens and nibs.

    Thanks for correcting the misconception!

I generally avoid anything other than dye based just to make the cleaning process easier, but I will give it a try when I make a new order

I have a bunch of MBs, modern and vintage, and they get mostly iron gall ink. Old Pelikans, too & also vintage lever & button fillers. No need to worry about eyedroppers and IG inks.

I don’t use IG inks in 51s, Snorkels or vacuum fillers.

Same, except for the last one: I happily ink my vac-fillers with IG. The combo is just too good to resist!

In my experience, and much to my surprise, yes.

I used ESSRI for a bit in my Vac 51. It was a lovely combination, and I could write on anything - even Moleskine paper. I didn't leave it in so very long as to know if it would have caused issues with the pen, but I would use it again.

I don't use IG inks in any of my pens if I can help it. I don't need to as there are plenty of dry or waterproof inks out there that don't contain iron gall.

In a vac 51 the problem you might run into is iron precipitating out and clogging the collector. It’s nothing you couldn’t fix relatively easily, but on the other hand, not having to remove the hood and rinse the collector would be even easier.

Excellent point. I do not trust myself to take apart my 51s.
