Default Private Reserve Ink now gone.

Dale Penkala had posted on 14 September that Darla Aniline has passed away. She was the owner of Private Reserve Ink and literally ran the company as a one woman shop. Once remaining stocks are gone there probably won't be any replacement.

Mystery Ink #29 was Private Reserve Chocolat.

Bert Oser had written, "Private Reserve Ink was founded by Terry W. Johnson and Susan Schube in the workroom of Avalon Jewelers/Gallery in Zionsville, IN, as an addition to the fountain pen department. Terry's vision was simple... 'Why not have fountain pen ink in a rainbow of colors to expand the bounds of writing beyond standard black, blue, red and green.' In January 2018 Darla Aniline bought the company and now Private Reserve Inks are the only Woman owned Fountain Pen ink company. Darla continues the original vision of the founders but with more more attention to detail and customer service...."

Someday, the same will happen to Nathan Tardiff and Noodler's.

Then people will desperately search (and pay outrageous prices) for a bottle of Bulletproof Black the same way they do today for a bottle of Parker Penman Sapphire or MB Racing Green.

Darla Aniline, what a great family name for an ink maker.

Sad news for the community that Private Reserve will disappear.

Companies come and go (especially one man shows), some major players stay many decades.

Itˋs always a loss for the pen community if a ink or pen maker or nib Meister leaves, but I‘m not worried, you just have to look at the new players showed up the last years.
There are plenty of ink newcomers.

We live in the age of inks, we can choose from many hundred inks (most likely several thousands) and each year there are many new ones.

I dearly hope not. I'd heard he had taken on an apprentice. I don't know what monkey-wrench the pandemic may have thrown into that, however.

I liked her, and I enjoyed her feisty spirit. I'll miss her. However, I will not miss the inks. Nothing in the PR lineup was very good actually.

While we are awash in ink these days, truth is most of it is marketing rubbish rather than fine fluids. Only about two percent of available ink today is actually worth the price and worthy of using on good paper.

I read that Yafa has purchased the licensing of the Private Reserve line and that DC Supershow Blue has been released as a Monteverde ink (owned by Yafa). My first bottle of ink some 20 years ago was Lake Placid Blue and I wish I at least still had the bottle.

Oh gee. PR Spearmint continues to be my favorite green, and I have tried many. Anyone can send me their old half empty bottles of it if they don't like it--I will put it to use!

I will miss her and will especially miss Private Reserve inks. They have had beautiful blue inks.

    Look what I found!

It's the only Private Reserve ink I have. When I was hit with SITB in more than one of the old-style PR oval bottles, I pitched them all, including Naples Blue, Blue Suede, Lake Placid Blue and Midnight Blue. But this round bottle of DC Supershow Blue must have come later and I thought it might be okay. And then I promptly forgot about it, even though it sits in plain sight. It used to be compared with Penman Sapphire.

So, I looked through my ink sample sheets, and found the following. I wish I had dated it. Note the Penman Sapphire in the middle of the PR DC Supershow Blue!

I had a bottle of some PR blue ink. It was a teal-ish blue-black but I have forgotten the name. Beautiful color but it was THICK and never dried. I gave it to someone who liked thick inks...before I learned the add-water trick.

I have a full bottle of DC Supershow Blue that I got for the mystery ink thing. I probably wouldn't have bothered getting it otherwise. I have yet to try it. Sucks to hear the news. Sure new ink companies pop up but sucks to lose people in any hobby even so.

Private Reserve were some of my first inks. Ebony Blue and Ebony Green are favorites. Condolences to family and friends.

I have a set of the PR big-time blues: Lake Placid, American, DC Supershow, and DC Electric. Glad I have them, and will search for a second set. When I started using fountain pens again, about fifteen years ago, everyone said "use Noodlers". I never found a Tardiff blue that I liked...too much shading off into teal, and the one nicely purplish ink -- Blue Eel -- would not dry. PR had just the sort of purplish blue I wanted, so they became one of my standard saturated inks.

    Sad news.

I regret I must turn down offers below $100 for the bottle in box.
