    Question Mystery pen

    Hi All,

I found an old fountain pen among my Dad's things after he passed away. It has no brand markings. All I know about the pen is that it was given to my Dad as a going away gift when my family emigrated from the UK in 1968. I've included some links to a few photos in the hope that someone might be able to identify the brand; a long shot I know, but I'm curious to know as much about the pen as possible as it now holds quite a bit of sentimental value for me.

I have no idea when it was last used and it appeared to have no ink in it (or it had dried up); so I soaked it in distilled water for a few days and flushed it out with clean water. I then cycled clean distilled water through it until the water came out clear. I put some PILOT Iroshizuku Shin-Kai ink in it and to my surprise, it writes beautifully.

Can anyone identify the pen brand, or hazard a guess based on the scant information I've supplied? The only markings on the pen are on the nib, and all it says is "Platignum, 1st Quality, M".

Thanks in advance for any information.

    Cheers,
    Steve.

    Hi Steve,
After looking at the nib and exercising a little google-fu my guess is its a Platignum Regal. There is some decent pics of it here https://goodwriterspens.com/2015/06/21/platignum-regal/ My best guess.

Yep, Deb's Blog site is a storehouse of valuable information on English fountain pens and mechanical pencils.

Thanks digitalsedition, you nailed it. After looking at the pic on the blog site, and at some of pens for sale on eBay, I noticed that they had "Platignum Regal, Made in England" engraved on the body. I could see no such markings on my pen, but upon closer inspection (with a 10x loupe), there is the same marking on my pen, albeit almost completely worn away (from use I guess).

    Mystery solved! Thanks again!
    -Steve.
