Default Warning: A scammer responding to WTB posts

Here's the message I got (and replace "Japanese large Broad nib" with anything else you have a WTB)

I played along, sent email, asked for pics/prices. Get a response for $380 and a picture of Pilot Broad nib plastic rollerball pen

What an idiot; can't even do a good job at fraud

Figured other may have received this too, so just wanted to share.

Yup, got a message from him as well.
We'll see if he actually sends pics. Could be good for a laugh

This has happened before on FPG. Never respond to any new "member" who sends you an email address saying they have the item you want.

Just a heads up, a user with the name HHOLAACH and using the email XXXXX sent almost exactly the same message in response to my want ad so, if you are looking for something, be diligent.

EDIT: Did think before I posted so deleted the email

It's probably better if you don't post their email address link as it might encourage some to click on it unwisely.

Yeah I got a contact from a user with 0 posts and a response that didn't quite make sense in context. Definitely ignoring.

Chrissy Thanks, I deleted it from my message but, unfortunately, it is still in your message where you quoted me.

There's no danger in an email address unless you actually send mail to it, in which case the only danger is that they then have your email address and can potentially send you mail you don't want.

Or hack your entire email system.

I would be interested in knowing how you would propose to do that.

Also, with all due respect, I'm not sure what you mean by "entire" either. Most people use a commercial, professionally maintained, system which is not easily compromised. Certainly not by any "malicious" email. I use one of my own servers for SMTP and let a commercial service take care of POP, but regardless of how you set it up, any vulnerability in postfix or dovecot or whatever email server is running, is not easy to compromise. It's certainly not as easy as "hack your entire email system" - whatever that means. As for the computer running the email client, don't give away your passwords.

PS: I really don't want to start an argument derailing the thread, but you seemed so sure in that comment that I just had to respond. Perhaps also you know a lot about the security of email systems and are way beyond me in the understanding of them - in which case I welcome your reasoned and knowledgeable response.

Many of my contacts have had their emails hacked. Some, multiple times. The scammers then have not only their original address, but every address in their contacts list.

This is not a good thing. So I would urge caution in sending any response to an unknown email address.

I bet he doesn't want to buy that Mont Blanc yellow ink that's been in the sale section for a year.

I suspect he/she may have morphed into Jay71 ... replying to my WTB saying "they're not so hard to find!" and sending me a picture of their numbered pen. However that number is owned by and in the possession of ThePelikansPerch author.
