Default FPG Refugees Status Area: The 2020 FPN Diaspora

Feel free to post any information in this thread regarding the influx of refugees from FPN. This has to be the fourth time, at least, that a large scale population movement has occurred in the last 8 years since I've been here. We wish them all well, and remind everyone that there is somewhere between "virtually none" to "no" moderation or administration of this site. We haven't seen Eric in years.

    Have a great week!

What’s prompting the exodus this time?

Site has been down for the better part of a week now. Database corruption forced an unscheduled software upgrade that has proven to be quite challenging (just going by the update messages).

There were a couple of known entities that made it clear, plus the traffic. I'm in observation mode.

So far I see not much new in the new member area.
Any increase in traffic and active members would be highly welcome.

But it seems that many still tolerate censorship, strange rules, commercialization, and mods with almighty fantasies on the dark side.

The other question is will people which are looking over the fence caused by the downtime of the dark empire stay after their downtime is over?
I think most people tend to participate only in one forum of a specific topic.

I'm just happy to have a place that others can come to, even if for a short time, even if no intention of saying hello or anything else. I've been in that position before where a big site went down - a couple times - that a lot of people counted on for their social interactions. It doesn't matter how *I* view another place, how *I* think it treats people, they like it. And if it goes away, for short or long duration, I think it is a good thing that there is an alternative, and that for however long they stay, it's a positive experience.

I joined FPG on November 9, 2016 after merely "lurking for more than a few years.

My choice to join this site was not out of dissatisfaction with FPN but pure despair from the events that had just taken place. I am still enjoying viewing this forum & happy to see familiar faces from FPN when I visit here. I have faithfully read new posts on this site, daily since joining but posted infrequently & posted little on FPN as well. I enjoy both sites & appreciate the opportunity to visit both.

I am sorry that others have found their way here from unpleasant situations on FPN but since I have not I am happy to see them here & appreciate the chance to see their posts here.

Oh, boy: I just realized that the post I made, including the in-editable thread title, have a typo. I was posting from my iPad, something I don't normally do, and it auto-corrected "refugees" to "refuges".

I'm very sorry I didn't see that initially and will now be chagrined for the duration of the internet. Please mentally correct this in your reading.

I'd say it'll largely depend on what they find here, close to the surface, now that they have occasion to look. Snark and grudges against an absent and/or unresponsive entity aren't exactly what attracts enthusiasts and their continued participation; and I think it'd be sad to build or foster community partly underpinned by shared grievances and dislike, towards what one apparently finds oneself helpless against and powerless to change.

I think most people tend to participate only in one forum of a specific topic.
If their personal needs and/or requirements are adequately met by a single-sourced solution, then yes, it makes sense in the name of convenience and efficiency to use that exclusively. I think you hit the nail neatly on the head with the operational word “participate”. Information consumers will attend anywhere a Web search engine takes them with a few clicks. I can hardly imagine anyone wanting to know more about a particular ink, before committing to purchasing a bottle, would limit himself to accessing or trusting only one site, blog or forum. Some might even ask the same questions on different sites, although the more common scenario is that someone will ask the same questions in different sub-forums on one site because that has a lower barrier to entry (i.e. one only needs to be registered for eligibility to post on one site, not two or several, irrespective of how trivial it may be to actually do) and requires less effort, when the task at hand has a palpable me-me-me focus. On the other hand, how many ink reviewers would publish their reviews (with largely unchanged content) on multiple sites? They don't need to do so to make the information more visible; Google and such already see to that. What would be the benefit to them in starting and/or attending to two separate discussion threads, or streams of thanks and further questions, on different sites in isolation from each other? I struggle to see any.

I was going to dive headlong into discussing topics that others of longer standing on FPG have raised, when I registered myself for an account a few days ago, but that didn't work. I wasn't planning on “saying hello”, and I didn't realise that “saying hello” by posting in the New Members forum is effectively a prerequisite for participation in other discussions.

It doesn't matter how *I* view another place, how *I* think it treats people, they like it. And if it goes away, for short or long duration, I think it is a good thing that there is an alternative, and that for however long they stay, it's a positive experience.
    Thanks.

I participate in hobbyist forums mainly for the “shared” geekery, and not so much the social aspect. My impression thus far is that there appears to be far more fountain pen geekery (e.g. focusing on the esoteric and the minutiae) on FPN, while — perhaps due to its largely unmoderated approach — FPG seems to be steered by its most active members largely towards (social and trade) networking.

You are still here, but also still there before its possibly temporary demise, as is the case with some others posting here.

I have never been impressed by forums bagging forums. It goes nowhere. There are differences in forum structures, conversations, and detail of interests as A Smug Dill commented above. Good.

You will find that topics here vary to a greater degree here than there. Drift is much better tolerated here, with quite a few digressions being highly entertaining in their own right. Contrast that with the debacle that happened over there about drift in Pay-it-Forward threads.

The upside of this place is that you can pretty much post what you like. The downside is that you can pretty much post what you like.

In the vein of geekery, I remember coming across this on FPGeeks (while I was waiting for something to happen with the posts I made here last week)…

I just did some rudimentary text parsing of the HTML page source of the Ink Review Index maintained by Chrissy; out of 526 hyperlinked ink reviews here, more than half of that are hers! I think it's fair to say she almost single-handedly carries that whole department.
