Default Pen sac company "Collectors assortment"

I am in need of some latex sacs and instead of ordering 2 or 3 at once piecemeal I figure I should order a bunch of common sizes all at once. What is all in this collector's assortment? Can't find info on the site.

15, 16, 17 seem the most common, with 18, 19, 20 being slightly less common.

The first three have gotten me pretty far. I only had to get whatever size works for an Eversharp Skyline. 19? I don't remember. I'm sure the pros will have better insight.

I don't know which company you are talking about or what the assortment is. As Azkid says, an awful lot of standard size pens will use 15-17, with 16 possibly being the most common size. I always have some 19-20 on hand, but that is for the oversize Sheaffer pens of the 20s and 30s. There are also many pens with thinner barrels so I have a few smaller sizes, though I don't always put new sacs in really tiny pens.

The last batch of sacs I picked up was directly from Dale Beebe of Pentooling, at last February's LA Pen Show. If you go to his repair supplies page you'll see two assortments he has if you want to just bulk up on sizes across the board (I went for the smaller set):

ITEM #37SACASSTMT: COLLECTORS ASSORTMENT OF 37 LATEX SACS & VAC DIAPHRAGMS. $40 Includes
    • 5 each of sizes: 15, 16, 17, 18, and 20,
    • 2 each of 12, 13, 14, Standard Vac and Deb Vac diaphragms
    • 1 each of 10, 19,

ITEM #100SACASSTMT: PROFESSIONALs ASSORTMENT OF 100 LATEX SACS. $180 Includes (ALL STRAIGHT):
    • (5) #14, (15) #16, (20) #18, (10) #20, (10) #15, (20) #17, (10) #19, (10) #22.

Hope that adds some insight. Just figure that those sacs that are supplied in larger amounts are the sacs most often needed.

Standard & Demi Skylines take tapered sacs. The executive size can take a straight one

Jon, the OP is referring to pensacs.com. One of the items in their order form is the "professional package".

I ordered my batch from them once a year. I just print the PDF form, fill it up, scan it back and send it to Peter via email.

Various sizes and also vacumatic diaphragms, some silicone sacs. Over the years, my most used sizes are 15, 16, 18, and 20.

We need to keep them going, for the sake of the vintage side of the hobby

And yes, they deliver top notch services and good quality product.

In 30 years of restoring pens, I have yet to open a Skyline with a tapered sac. Not once. Never. They may have left the factory that way, but I have never seen one, which suggests that any pen mechanic who worked on the pen after that used a standard sac. I think that the volume of ink gained with a tapered sac is likely insignificant, and the owner would never notice the difference.

In that case would a standard size sac suffice? Are necked sacs generally unnecessary?

Necked sacs can be useful in some cases. They're recommended for pens like the 20s and 30s pens like Challengers and Duofolds where the pressure bar has to reach down section and the sac could get in the way. It also allows the use of larger sacs in big pens like the Duofold. But it isn't always necessary. I really doubt that there is enough of a difference that most people notice the difference in size. There are so many variables that influence how much ink is taken into the pen when filled.....

Just for fun, I called Peter.

    Here is what you get:

    The Collector’s Assortment is $50.00 and contains 5 each of numbers 15, 16, 17, 18, and 20 Straight Sacs

    The Professional Assortment is $200.00 and has the following;
    5 No. 14 Straight
    10 No. 15 Straight
    15 No. 16 Straight
    20 No. 17 Straight
    20 No. 18 Straight
    10 No. 19 Straight
    10 No. 20 Straight
    10 No. 22 Straight

He has more or less stopped making the necked sacks and most of the tapered sacs and when the existing supply is gone, they will be gone. I got the impression that at the current rate these are ordered he has years of stock of some sizes.

You can use this order form for your needs.

Thanks. Placed a smaller order than the collector's because I don't need all of those sacs (yet). Surprised he doesn't advertise what the set includes on the order form.

I was wondering, did I miss where to specify ordering a collectors set on the form?

I felt like for the moment I would be best off to put in a small order for two of the more common sizes that I am almost out of, plus a couple different vac sizes, too.

I hope he is passing along the knowledge somehow...

I use mostly 15s, 16s, and 17s or 18s, depending on what I am working on. Once in awhile I need something smaller, usually a 14. But those middle sizes cover a lot of ground in terms of the pens I have (which tend to all be standard sized-pens). I think I only have one truly "oversized" pen in my collection and I don't have very slim ones.

14, 16, 18, 20 and 22. The smallest is for the occasional Conway Stewart Dinkie that comes my way, the two largest for Swan Leverlesses.

    I use mostly 15s, 16s, and 17s or 18s,
That's the middle of the bell curve. Fifteens are most common on the Touchdown Sheaffers. Its possible to get by without 17 sacs, but I find that I'm using them quite often, and you need them for the fat TD pens and PFMs. Only Marten Smith sold the half sizes used in snorkel, TD and PFM/fat TD pens, and he passed away something like 2 or 3 years ago, so the straight sizes are what we use.
