Red face Books on Inks - History of ink

I am intrigued by inks obviously.
I was wondering if any one recommends a good book on history of inks in general....

The only one I found was the Social life of Ink

be sure to get the Kindle Edition so no ink is used printing the book

(that does look like an interesting book by the way at least to another ink lover)

Heresy!! I'll let you know how it is. I wasn't so sure as he starts with ball points, another heresy!

I read the reviews on Amazon, and I think I'll pass. I'm not fond of a literary approach to history and technology. I'm still tempted though, and may change my mind if at some point I don't find a replacement.

I would love to find a book or two on this. I hate to see threads go with only one or two responses so here is my bump.

I can't recommend it yet, because I have not yet read it, but this kind of piqued my interest:

Thaddeus David's - The History of Ink (1860)

This came up in a search and seemed potentially intriguing as well.

Joe Nickell - Pen, Ink, & Evidence: A Study of Writing and Writing Materials for the Penman, Collector, and Document Detective

I looked up both the books @azkid mentioned, and am quite tempted to buy them both.

Thanks Azkid, for the bump. And the suggestions.... The second one seems to be extremely intriguing..... I'll look it up after reading Social life of Ink.....

    Good man.

And I've done my research on the other two books and have decided to get the Joe Nickell (Pen, Ink, & Evidence) book. They're a little bit expensive, but I think I found a good used copy and I'll pull the trigger in the morning.

Being close to Christmas and the postal service they way it is thanks to the pandemic, I decided to opt out from ordering from international.
However, I found a very good priced one abebooks. Though you're there for a long wait....
It's ironic, we are neighbours, but shipping from US to Canada would take often longer than from Europe

In my experience, shipping from US generally takes about a week with usps, but in some areas it seems that they don't send directly to Canada so the system has flaws. I had three orders from US about two weeks ago, and two of them got here a few days ago, and one seems to be taking forever. Anyway, I think I'll order from Abebooks when their registration site comes back up. Funny system they have where you can't buy directly from them without signing up on another site (specs.openid.net). Oh well, I should just calm down and be patient.

So AbeBooks didn't get back to me (although it is Saturday), and the site is still not allowing account creation, so no shopping for new customers. However, the good news is that I found the book for only a little bit more with free shipping on BetterWorldBooks and the experience was nice and smooth. Now I just have to wait. They say it takes 10-20 days with standard (free) shipping. No idea why ink is quick and books are slow! Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading my own copy of Pen Ink & Evidence by Joe Nickell.

Sorry, bit late with this but perhaps for another time: I recommend Bookfinder for this sort of book hunt. It'll will search a whole bunch of sites in one go and save you a lot of time, even if only by elimination.

Thanks a lot, Lady Weevil. I actually managed to buy a very well priced copy of this book. Though what I got as price didn't coorrespond to what I paid

I ended up on WorldCat, and that's how I found the book at BetterWorldBooks. WorldCat also tells you which libraries has it and indicates the closest location.

but I'll look into that another time.

I got the Social life of Ink, yesterday. It's a very enjoyable read., well written and witty. For now, I'm following the author, finding the truth behind the miserable ballpoint in the Cafes of Budapest. That alone is worth the money. I'm travelling in style, from my armchair....
