Default Is this a cheap fake

    Hi
I have been told my pen is a 1980s rep pen from a conference but it is nothing like any of the ones on here. It seems light and cheap. No serial number and nothing saying made in Germany. On the pen barrel the white star isn’t in resin it is just stuck on and on the lid it is flat. Please can anyone identify it for me. The nib is totally different too

    Many thanks

    It's legit. Looks like a 221 from the 1960s.
    Vintage. Cursive italic. Iron gall.

Yup, looks legit but I think it's a later Generations pen rather than the three digit series.

Many thanks for your speedy replies.. I am over the moon.. I wanted one for decades and I got this one a few years ago and then started to doubt it was genuine when I look at all the beautiful nibs and barrels.. it writes amazingly and I love it..

All my other pens are Parker’s, lamy and Waterman’s so I like a little luxury..

When I Googled both and compared images showing the 221 and the Generations I thought the V shaped notch above the nib made this pen look more like the former than the latter but I don't know these earlier models very well.

I have a 121. The 221 should be about the same apart from nib carats, some markings, and ink window colour. In comparison with mine the nib marking is different, the notch shape is different, and the barrel end perhaps larger diameter. I do not have a Generations pen to compare.

I Googled Montblanc 221 and selected Images. This is what came up
Some of them have the same nib markings and some have different nib markings.
Whatever model it is, your pen is an authentic Montblanc so please don't have any concerns about that.

Isn’t the model number on the cap band? That’s the case with my 220. I believe the Generation also says “Generation” on the cap band.( I’d check, but. i’m not sure where my Generation has got to.) The Generation clip is more rounded at the top and its shell lacks the notch that this pen has. The double cap band looks like that from the 221. I think the 121 has the mitre cap band.

The three digit pens succeeded the two digit pens in the 1970s, and the Generation came afterwards.

I just got my Generation out. It says 'Generation' on the cap band, the end cap is not flat, and it doesn't have that notch where nib meets section. So, probably the 221.
My other pen is a Montblanc.

And my other blog is a tumblr!

Light does not equate to cheap in pens.

No, it doesn't have anything written on it..

Yes I understand wirh the light, foe some reason I expected a mont blanc to be more.. Substantial ha ha my bad. I was comparing it to a waterman which I thought was of rhe same era.. Now I know the mont blanc is much older than I thought.. Many thanks

In fact all my good pens are light, and the only heavy ones are dirt cheap Chinese ones.

That's my experience too - brass bodied Chinese pens.

If it is a 221 (or any of that series), it will have the number engraved on the cap ring. You may need a loupe to see it if it is worn.

It writes amazingly.. smooth flow and just enough flex in the nib for me because I press on as I write.

It says Montblanc Germany on the bottom of the lid but nothing on the top band

I have a 221 (two, actually, although one broke). Mine have superb, soft, 585 gold EF nibs that exhibit slight, natural line variation. The fit and finish is really good on my examples.

Their light weight is conducive to longer writing sessions with less fatigue and they weigh about the same as a Parker 45, uncapped.

The hood on mine are thin and the design is prone to cracking with heavy pressure. One of mine had cracks in the hood at the corners of the nib. I would hesitate to try to flex these pens for that reason. Later on the hood / barrel connector part broke in half. Also, the caps can crack around the clip, based on my other pen and on inspecting a number of ebay listings. As a result, I regard these pens as somewhat delicate.

Mine tend to write on the wet side and so they like drier inks or inks that are more tolerant of a range of pens: Waterman Intense Black, Lamy Black, Montblanc Mystery Black, Robert Oster Carbon Fire are inks that have worked well. Pelikan 4001 Black is a bit too dry for mine, and Quink Black is too wet, imo.

I've flown with mine on a number of occasions with no issues and mine are very reliable and always ready to write.

Overall, I think they are very good pens.
