Default Thin white coating on vintage Pelikan 100N barrels

    Hello everybody,

Upon removing the sleeve (a.k.a. binde) from Pelikan 100N barrels one can often find a thin white coating which helps rendering the pen body opaque, and the body color somewhat lighter. This is particularly frequent in pens with tortoise shell color sleeves. This layer which is gradually getting thinner toward the ink window often needs to be removed and repainted when restoring such pens because of being damaged.
Can someone with this particular repair experience please suggest what kind of paint is being used there and how to apply it.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello, again,
As this thread got no reply so far, I did some individual research, so I can update the thread with the best solution I’ve found.
I found a quick drying matte white acrylic lacquer spray giving acceptable results in terms of color, surface and thickness:

    1. the barrel has to be dry, clean, de-greased, and parts we don’t want to paint masked with tape.

    2. the paint should be applied carefully and sparingly, from the distance of approx. 40 cm (16”) while the barrel is rotated, so as little paint as possible could be aplied as thinly and evenly as possible.

    3. the layer should be left for a couple of hours to dry

    4. If the surface still feels sticky, one can apply a little talc or baby powder.

    5. If applied correcty the layer will be so thin that no shaving or polishing will be needed.

I have a black/brown pre-WWII Pelikan 100, with both barrel and binde badly damaged. The binde could be repaired, but the barrel was broken beyond repair, so it had to be replaced and painted white in the binde area, so the nuances of brown colors can stand out, as originally.

Here are few pictures taken in process:

That really is a marvellous repair, and it's an addition to my Pelikan knowledge so thank you for sharing it with us!

Really excellent work. Having dealt with Pelikan 100 binde before, I know how fragile those things are.
