The "3" pens

In my view, for most people, it started with the visual appeal.

Later on, after they are in, they will discover so many cool things in this hobby that "hooked" them even more.

Take me for an example, I knew what a fountain pen is, I had memories of using one when I was little, but not until I saw photos after photos of gorgeous fountain pens that I realized it could be a new hobby.

Therefore whenever someone asked me which pens to show to an interested person, I'd say start by showing them the most beautiful pen you've got.

Good idea. Something like Waterman Carene, or a beautiful and inexpensive Chinjese Jinhao X-450. Perhaps one of the more beautiful Sonnets. A Chinese lacque model. Form over function. Interest them in the looks. Might be more successful.

I remembered as a newbie in this hobby, one of the most memorable pen for me is the Tornado Lincoln, one from Retro 51, whose focus (and profit maker) is actually ballpoints.

The old ones are cooler, in my opinion. But I'm glad that the new ones follow their shape if not their filling system.

No, but given the threads of a broken, cracked, or otherwise non functional MB, I consider it good advice.

I think budget is critically important. Many fine pens have been suggested in this thread, but there is a world of difference between a Pilot Metropolitan and an MB 149 or Aurora Homo Sapiens.

Another important consideration is the type of nib, and this is very personal and it really requires some hands-on experience to find your preferences. Some people prefer fine, even extremely fine nibs, some like them broader, even much broader, and then there are stub nibs and cursive italics and flex nibs and even specialty grinds like architect nibs. Also different people prefer different amounts of feedback. i prefer buttery-smooth nibs, but some people complain that writing with a nib like that is like writing on glass, with their nib sliding out of control.

Other factors include the filling system and the ink capacity.

And of course, aesthetics.

In short, there's a lot to take into account. I'd suggest buying a few of the less expensive pens available of different types, and then if you find that you like a certain style and can afford it, try out a more expensive pen in the same style.
