I'm sorry, but I think I'd buy the Wing Sung 601 first. It looks like the better pen.

Clearly there are not many from his forum standing in the queue for one.

I will eventually buy two, the classic in Teal and deluxe in Plum when they become available.

Does a Wing Sung 601 bought for £8.81 from www.aliexpress.com really compare to these ?

I have a Wing Sung 601. It doesn't seem possible that the remade P51 can be superior on a dollar for dollar basis. I believe the original P51 aerometric is better than either. Cost-wise it's hard to beat the Wing 601 with either the original or remade Parker 51.

All we can tell from photos are aesthetics, and just like supermodels, it is possible that image enhancement has occurred. The only way to know is to see how they feel in-hand, and how they write. Then people can wager as to how best spend their money.

If I decided to go ahead and buy the brand new pen then I don't think an extra $12 would prevent me from getting the new converter.

I believe the original P51 aerometric is better than either.

    I 100% agree with you.

JS, wise words ( my pleasure to read them )

My interest is to look at one or two ( classic / deluxe )

I thought the 2002 P51SE was rather wonderful, the Legacy ( Black ) was the best P51 cap that I have ever seen.
    ( Two images attached )

For my money the best P51 was the 1958/59 C/C, vastly creative and clever.

This new version will never compare to any other versions, it is very different.

Just a modern version designed to attract new pen users.

I have several Parker 51 vintage aerometric pens. I don't have any enthusiasm for buying new fountain pens. I am tired of C/C pens. Most of the many C/C pens I have are hard starters, generally needing a wetting or a fill-up to get going. That and at this point I do not like the looks of the new 2021 Parker 51s.

    pajaro,

These modern versions of the P51 are not designed for you or I.

They are for the new generation of Parker users.

I will wait and see what they are like when I actually have one.

It is different, a modern version

Hardly a replacement to the classic P51 but I think it was never going to be.

Thanks for the superb images, Proteus. That appears to be a fairly close colour match to the P51 Aerometric Teal.

I agree that this pen was never going to be an attempt at a repeat of the original P51. If it were Parker could simply have brushed off the drawings for the wonderful P51 CC from the late 1950s (amongst my favourite P51s) and made some adjustments to cater for new materials, and current Parker branding.

Perhaps it might be an idea to consider the "Parker 51 reimagined" in the same way as the UK Aerometric Duofolds (mid-50s to mid-70s). That is, reliable and good writers at middle of the road prices (the Aerometric Duofolds were priced from roughly just over £1 [Slimfold] to c.£2.50 [Maxima] at a time when a P51 Custom was North of £5). I can see some symmetry here in that modern Duofolds can cost £400+ quite easily whilst the new P51 is c.£70 for the CT version and c.£200 for the Deluxe.

Whether or not this new P51 is better than some of Parker's other current mid-range pens is a moot point. Certainly mine is a very smooth writer, and I do rather like the look of it but I am not sufficiently familiar with the current Parker FP range to be able to draw any conclusions on that front. Doubtless others have and will, and I expect that there may well be quite a variety of opinion.

I wondered before I bought the pen where on the spectrum the new P51 Burgundy colour would sit. It is not a bad fit. Here is a snapshot of my new pen between two Newhaven P51s - a 1951 Q1 Classic on the left and a c.1957 Deluxe to the right. Also I fancy that there is a very faint hint of claret to the new P51 colour.

    Sheptonian,

I read your reply with great interest.

    Liked your image too.

I thought the remake was rather clever.

    The cap uses Sonnet technology

The feed unit I thought was clever.

    The shells were rather good.

They should have gold plated the nib, then it would have looked vastly better.

    Hardly a P51SE or a P51 C/C

I thought that the price point was on the money, it is cheaper than most Sonnets

From the pictures you showed of the teal pen it has all chrome trim with no signs of gold plating anywhere, therefore IMHO they have correctly left the steel nib chrome coloured so that it matches the rest of the pen. Isn't this common among many manufacturers? They don't usually stick a gold coloured nib in an all chrome trim pen?

The original Parker 51's may have had gold coloured nibs because they had actual gold nibs, but you could barely see the nib anyway so it didn't matter so much that it was gold. On the new 51 the steel nib sticks out more so it is more noticeable and therefore needs to match.

The new 51 DL versions with gold plated caps have gold nibs. They look nice.
