jar mentionned in the chatbox the following: "the image is on a prototype Sheaffer NoNonsense pen. The cal has a covered compartment with a self ining stamp as shown."

How about this stamp that was sent by a pen friend? And which side is UP?

Jar, it’s a family name: Noda, maybe Nota or possibly Yada. In Japanese.

Fred, rotate the one in the upper right about 10 degrees clockwise and it’ll be upright.

I’m guessing Fuku or Saki if it’s a name.

Otherwise, it means ‘good fortune’, ‘luck’ or ‘happiness’.

I’ve made much better money off my English ability than my Japanese. It’s a hard sell here. The odd translation gig doesn’t pay the rent.

It must be "good luck" because it was related to the year of the rat. So it's Japanese, not Chinese?

They use a similar character set.
My other pen is a Montblanc.

And my other blog is a tumblr!

The Japanese adopted Chinese characters for their Kanji system, so *technically* it's both.

But within the context you've given, that stamp of yours is a "very" stylized (and quite beautiful) writing of the Chinese character "Fu" which means Good Fortune.

Thank you! With that information, I will use the stamp quite liberally on correspondence; some of you have already seen that Good Fortune.

Think it's the Japanese family name "Noda". That looks like a name stamp used to sign stuff.
